should Unknown be created as a subcategory?

There is no subcategory by which people can view the uncategoried works under Secular&Unknown -- should one be created here and in other genres such as Sacred? -- Vaarky 01:30, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

There should be no works at all under such category 'Unknown'. These should be corrected to point to a more specific category, such as 'Unknown composer', 'Unknown genre' etc. —Carlos Email.gif 07:58, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

should Patriotic be a separate subgenre or get lumped under Folksongs?

Opinions? -- Vaarky 04:01, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Couldn't these Patriotic works be regarded as "Anthems"? —Carlos Email.gif 08:01, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Mmm, I've been using "folksong" for anonymous orally transmitted works, and Anthems is already pretty well understood (and populated) as a category for 'Anglican motets' sung by choirs. Patriotic songs have more in common with hymns, which are sung 'congregationally' and have migrating metrical texts: in the US most hymnals include "My country tis of thee" to the tune of the Prussian national anthem. The Star-spangled Banner/Anacreon in Heaven is of course a glee.
I could see a category for national anthems, but that would unnecessarily exclude a lot. In general, do we want to (sub)categorize genre by subject matter, i.e. 'Lieder (pantheistic)', or 'Art songs (erotic)'? We've got one foot on that road with Christmas (secular) (which might be more fittingly renamed 'Xmas' ;-)). Richard Mix 04:34, 21 July 2011 (CDT)

consort Lieder

I'm still not exactly sure how to recategorize the Catalan Nadala (Josep Navarro i Solves), but looking at Lieder it strikes me that we might wish to distinguish Klavierlieder from the renaissance Tenorlied. Shall I create Tenorlieder and start gathering Senfl's German-texted madrigals & chansons there, or let them rub shoulders with Brahms? Another split on these lines might be "mélodies" (including "romances", I suppose) for piano-accompanied French art-chansons. Richard Mix 04:53, 21 July 2011 (CDT)

So there were Renaissance lieder? This is news to me, as the word lied always brings to my mind music of the Romantic period. So yes, this differentiation you suggest makes sense to me. —Carlos Email.gif 00:04, 22 July 2011 (CDT)
