Cleanup & categorizing

Thanksgiving is celebrated in churches as well as elsewhere, but is not part of the church calendar: Handel's and Purcell's were written for various dates. I suppose we would want all thanksgiving pieces rather than those of one particular national holiday anyway... Richard Mix 09:36, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

I agree that it should not be related to a particular holiday. From the description you gave above, it should probably be categorized under "secular music". —Carlos Email.gif 13:41, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
The one piece already categorized opens: "We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing", so I dont quite agree with 'secular', even though text and tune are closely associated with US Thanksgiving. My point was that thanksgiving services are not part of 'the church year' proper but occasional events that are still 'liturgical'. We could, I suppose, make an Category:Occasional subcat of Category:Sacred music by season that could contain thanksgiving (Te Deum), penitential (BWV 131) and funeral (LvB op 118) categories. Otherwise I'd say go with Sacred. Richard Mix 00:01, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
Sacred music by season was (or should be) intended for "liturgical" seasons. On the other hand, Thanksgiving, as a category, should probably be placed as a subcategory of Sacred music, since almost all music for such occasions seems to be sacred. If and when we encounter secular thanksgiving music, we could create a "Thanksgiving (secular)" category, much as we have Christmas (secular) which is a repository for such works as "Jingle Bells", "Wassail", "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire", etc. – Chucktalk Giffen 14:51, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
I notice we have Category:Harvest as well as the still uncreated category for Rogation Days; Church Dedications (and their anniversaries) are also part of the Proper of Saints: why shouldn't all of them be in :Category:Sacred music by season]]? Richard Mix 21:59, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
