Biography

(summary) Edouard Silas was born in Amsterdam. He started his training early, giving his first public performance at age ten. Moving to Paris, he entered the Conservatoire and studied organ and composition. In 1850 he moved to England; first to Liverpool, then to London. He became organist at the Catholic Chapel of Kingston upon Thames and professor of harmony at the Guildhall School of Music and the London Academy of Music. He composed several symphonies, piano concertos, string quartets, an oratorio, many instrumental works, numerous organ works, and a number of part-songs. He died in London.
