The Sunday following January 6, the Epiphany, is called Domenica infra octavam Epiphaniae or the Sunday within the Octave of Epiphany, with its own propers. From 1920 this day was (and in the present Extraordinary Form still is) celebrated as the feast of the Holy Family. In the Liber Usualis one comes across the rather confusing rubrics assigning both masses to Sunday, but specifying that the Missa de Domenica is said "on the day following the Feast of the Holy Family" (p. 429 of the 1923 LU, or p. 477 of the 1961 edition).

In 1970 Holy Family was moved to the Sunday after Christmas and Ordinary Time followed Epiphany.
