Description: Although Novum et insigne opus musicum (1537) is the earliest printed source, it has been shown that Nymphes nappés was the original text and Haec dicit Dominus is a contrafactum made by Conrad Rupsch (c.1475-1530). The use of Circumdederunt me as a cantus firmus is a treatment also made in Josquin's Sic Deus dilexit mundum

Cantus firmus: Circumdederunt me gemitus mortis: dolores inferni circumdederunt me.

Nymphes des eaux, Néridriades, Nymphes des bois,
venez pleurer ma désolation
car je languis en telle affliction
que mes esprits sont plus morts que malades.

English.png English translation

Water nymphs, Nereids, Dryads,
come and mourn my desolation
for I suffer such affliction
that my spirits are more dead than alive.

Cantus firmus: The groans of death have encircled me: the sorrows of hell have enclosed me.
