Smith and Jones, Hymns Original and Selected, 1812

1. O when shall I see Jesus,
And reign with him above;
And from that flowing fountain
Drink everlasting love?
When shall I be delivered
From this vain world of sin,
And with my blessed Jesus,
Drink endless pleasures in?

2. But now I am a soldier,
My Captain's gone before,
He's given me my orders,
And bid me not give o'er;
If I continue faithful,
A righteous crown he'll give,
And all his valiant soldiers
Eternal life shall have.

3. Through grace I am determined
To conquer, though I die,
And then away to Jesus,
On wings of love, I'll fly.
Farewell to sin and sorrow,
I bid you all adieu;
And O my friends be faithful,
And on your way pursue.

4. And if you meet with trouble
And trials on your way,
Then cast your care on Jesus,
And don't forget to pray.
Gird on the heavenly armor
Of faith, and hope, and love;
And when the combat's ended
He'll carry you above.

5. O do not be discouraged,
For Jesus is your friend;
And if you want more knowledge,
He'll not refuse to lend:
Neither will he upbraid you,
Though oftener you request;
He'll give you grace to conquer,
And take you home to rest.

6. And when the last loud trumpet
Shall rend the vaulted skies,
And bid the entombed millions
From their cold beds arise;
Our ransomed dust revived,
Bright beauties shall put on,
And soar to the blest mansions
Where our Redeemer's gone.

7. Our eyes shall then with rapture
The Savior's face behold;
Our feet no more diverted,
Shall walk the street of gold ;
Our ears shall hear with transport
The hosts celestial sing;
Our tongues shall chant the glory
Of our immortal King.

Parkinson, Selection of Hymns and Spiritual Songs, 1817

1. O when shall I see Jesus,
And reign with him above;
And from the ſlowing fountain
Drink everlasting love.
When shall I be delivered
From this vain world of sin,
And with my blessed Jesus,
Drink endless pleasures in?

2. But now I am a soldier,
My Captain's gone before,
He's given me my orders,
And bid me not give o’er;
His promises are faithful,
A righteous crown he’ll give,
And all his valiant soldiers
Eternally shall live.

3. Through grace I am determined
To conquer, though I die,
And then away to Jesus,
On wings of love I’ll fly.
Farewell to sin and sorrow,
I bid you both adieu;
And, O my friends, prove faithful,
And on your way pursue.

4. When-e'er you meet with troubles
And trials on your way,
Then cast your care on Jesus,
And don’t forget to pray:
Gird on the heavenly armor
Oſ faith and hope, and love;
And when the combat’s ended
He'll carry you above.

5. O do not be discouraged,
For Jesus is your friend:
And if you want more knowledge,
He’ll not refuse to lend:
Neither will he upbraid you,
Though oft'her your request;
He'll give you grace to conquer,
And take you home to rest.

6. And when the last loud trumpet
Shall rend the vaulted skies,
And bid the entombed millions
From their cold beds arise,
Our ransomed dust, revived,
New beauties shall put on,
And soar to the blest mansion
Where our Redeemer's gone.

7. Our eyes shall them with rapture
The Savior’s face behold:
Our feet, no more diverted,
Shall walk the streets of gold;
Our ears shall hear with transport
The hosts celestial sing;
Our tongues shall chant the glories
Of our immortal King.

Dover Selection, 1831

1. O when shall I see Jesus,
And reign with him above?
And from the flowing fountain
Drink everlasting love?
When shall I be delivered
From this van world of sin,
And with my blessed Jesus
Drink endless pleasures in?

My Captain's gone before;
He’s given me my orders,
And bids me ne'er give o'er,
His promises are faithful,
A righteous crown he’ll give;
And all his valiant soldiers
Eternally shall live.

3. Through grace 1 am determined
To conquer, though I die,
And then away to Jesus,
On wings of love I’ll fly.
Farewell to sin and sorrow!
I bid them both adieu!
And, O, my friends, prove faithful
And on your way pursue.

4. When-e'er you'meet with troubles
And trials on your way,
Then cast your care on Jesus,
And don't forget to pray:
Gird on the gospel armor
Of faith, and hope, and love;
And when the combat's ended,
He ‘ll carry you above.

5. O do not be discouraged,

Southern Harmony, 1835
(Faithful Soldier)

1. O when shall I see Jesus,
And dwell with him above,
And drink the flowing fountains
Of everlasting love.
When shall I be delivered,
From this vain world of sin?
And with my blessed Jesus
Drink endless pleasure in.

2. But now I am a soldier,
My Captain's gone before,
He's given me my orders,
And tells me not to fear:
And if I hold out faithful,
A crown of life he'll give,
And all his valiant soldiers
Eternal life shall have.

3. Through grace I am determined
To conquer, though I die,
And then away to Jesus,
On wings of love I'll fly:
Farewell to sin and sorrow--
I bid it all adieu,
And you my friends, be faithful,
And on your way pursue.

4. And if you meet with troubles,
And trials on the way,
Then cast your cares on Jesus,
And don't forget to pray,
Gird on the heavenly armor
Of faith, and hope and love,
And when your race is ended,
You'll reign with him above.

5. O do not be discouraged,
For Jesus is your friend,
And if you lack for knowledge,
He'll not refuse to lend,
Neither will he upbraid you,
Though often you request,
He'll give you grace to conquer,
And take you up to rest.

6. And when the last loud trumpet
Shall rend the vaulted skies,
And bid the entombed millions
From their cold beds arise,
Our ransomed dust, revived,
Bright beauties shall put on,
And soar to the bless’d mansions
Where our Redeemer’s gone.

7. Our eyes shall then with rapture,
The Savior’s face behold;
Our feet, no more diverted,
Shall walk the streets of gold;
Our ears shall hear with transport
The hosts celestial sing;
Our tongues shall chant the glories
Of our immortal King.
