Talk:Dagli occhi il dolce giro (Luca Marenzio)

After some research, I've concluded that the correct text is "Degli occhi il dolce giro" and not "Dagli occhi". It seems that "il giro degli occhi" is a typical stylistic element of the renaissance... If nobody has contrary evidence I would merge this page with the madrigal "Degli occhi" by Marenzio and change the name giulia tonelli 19:12, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi Giulia! I agree that "Degli occhi il dolce giro" makes more sense when we read it as "the turn of [her] eyes". But since it's a poetical text, words may have alternative meanings as well. I particularly believe that the word giro was used here as a synonym for sguardo (gaze), in which case "Dagli occhi" would be perfectly acceptable. I would not be amazed if we discovered that the original title was indeed "Dagli occhi"; it would explain why this form is ~10 times more common than "Degli occhi". I would interpret the first two verses of the text as follows:

Dagli occhi il dolce giro (the sweet gaze [out] of her eyes)

E'l guardo ond'ardo... (and her look that makes me burn...)

In any case, it's clear that both pages need to be merged because it's the same work. I would only suggest that the merger be made in this page instead, because it's older and more complete.
