The solution is (I learned from a book in the conservatorylibrary) : Start the canon at the proper place but a 'secunde' lower By transposing it up an octave one hears clearly the strange 'modus' in which this - in those days - extremely familiar melody has te be sung. I have been experimenting with possible solutions, and the one you give is the only one which seems to work, in spite of the "estrangement". Crecquillon was fond of posing riddles (often riddle canons). I found a few good ones in my old copies of his 4 part motets (a four volume set published by the Institute of Mediaeval Music, Ltd. in the early 1970's - not all that well transcribed, unfortunately). Text underlay

As is sometimes the case with Crecquillon, there is some stuff to be filled in with the text underlay. The 'ij' in the part books is a symbol to repeat the previous text. I'm working on filling in the text now. ChuckGiffen Noon CST, 10 January

I updated the PDF of this chanson with the 5th voice and revised the textunderlay. I realized that the edtion of Susato only gives a few indications of where to place the text and when to duplicate... So i took the liberty to choose more freely and especially to keep some melodic logic and if possible togetherness of some voices... I added my edition - 2 versions - one without musica ficta the other with. Also, I placed the canon a step below the Superius (rather than a seventh above). Thanks for the encouragement! -- ChuckGiffen 08:29 CST, 13 January 2006
