I have not been able to find this text among the works of Isaac Watts, in any edition of his Psalms or Hymns and Spiritual Songs, Divine and Moral Songs, or Horae Lyricae. I also searched quickly in the nine-volume Works (1812 ff.). The earliest reference I could find to it was Benjamin Milgrove's Sixteen Hymns of 1768 (according to HTI), and in later editions of George Whitefield's Collection of Hymns for Social Worship, in Ed. 23 (1777). It does read like a hymn in an evangelical style. — Barry Johnston (talk) 00:19, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Dianne Shapiro at Hymnary.org has done some digging, and discovered that this hymn was "attributed to Maria Theresa Stonehouse who lived from about 1722-1751. She was a leading member of the London Moravian Congregation." Thanks, Dianne! This conclusion is supported by the appearance of this hymn as later stanzas in a hymn beginning "My Jesus, look on me thy child" in a Moravian Brethren hymnbook of 1742. I created a page for this hymn. — Barry Johnston (talk) 21:21, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
