Education

Background

Resident: Cheshire, UK. Born March 1942, educated Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby and Brasenose College, Oxford (graduated BA 1964, MA 1973); PhD University of Liverpool, 1967. Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in English Literature at Universities of Leeds (1967-70) and Manchester (1970-93). Honorary Research Fellow, University of Manchester, 1993 to date.

Published some 25 + books and editions and numerous articles.

Amateur composer (mainly church music) from age of 14; informal composition lessons from A.D.Ashcroft and the late Professors Sir Jack Westrup and Peter Latham. Previously sang countertenor at Oxford and local churches and for many years played oboe and recorders. Now play transverse flute and spend much time arranging for flute and flute choir, as well as attempting musical education of young daughter, Hattie (an excellent flautist in the making). Composition and arrangements now on Sibeliusmusic.com site, many of them free of charge. Main non-musical hobby, gardening. Married to Mary; four children, Emily, Grace, Robin and Harriet.
