Text categories

Hi Edmund, I noticed that you've been adding {{TextPageCat}} to many text categories, thanks a lot for that! I was checking, however, and there are yet a large amount of these categories to be created; I'll see if I can do this via a robot. Please wait for a few more days, I'll inform you if I don't succeed. Best, —Carlos (talk) 06:29, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Well, better late than never, these recent changes will interest you, Edmund! —Carlos Email.gif 16:51, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, Carlos - this new system would appear to remove the need for the text categories. EJG (talk) 20:30, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Rationalising the text pages

I've been attempting over the last couple of months to tidy up the text pages (mainly Latin ones). I've reached the point where input from other administrators would be useful, so have started a discussion on the administrators' forum. Any thoughts valued, whether positive or negative. Jamesgibb (talk) 11:15, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

Lyricist template

I suspect I have done this on text pages quite a bit, through ignorance, through weakness, through my own deliberate fault, Edmund. I'll avoid it in future and correct it as I light upon it. Jamesgibb (talk) 07:09, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks James, for this and for your work on the text pages - I'm sorry if my edit summary seemed brusque, I certainly didn't mean it that way. Would it be a good thing to have a template {{TextLyricist|LYRICISTNAME}}, or something similar, to function similarly to Template:Lyricist, but for text pages, so that texts by the same lyricist could be categorised together, with the contents of this category displayed automatically on the lyricist page (similar to the way that Template:LyricistSettingsList displays the contents of the category of settings of texts)? EJG (talk) 19:17, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Editions categories

Hi Edmund, as you've been actively creating the Editions categories, you'll probably like to know that this process became slightly simpler: now we can just watch the category:Editors lacking an editions category and follow the instructions there. Regards, —Carlos (talk) 15:49, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Merger of Come, let us join

Hi Edmund, thanks for merging the two pages; I just did it again, but this time the other way around, in order to preserve the oldest of the two pages (this should be attempted whenever possible). Regards, —Carlos (talk) 04:24, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, Carlos. I hadn't realised the older of the two pages was to be kept for preference, but will bear this in mind in future. Regards, EJG (talk) 07:22, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
In fact it's not a rule written in stone, but public wikis tend to follow it because usually the oldest page has a longer history of contributions. Keeping the page history is required by CC licenses so that each contribution's author may be credited for it. Best, —Carlos (talk) 16:23, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Renaming pages

Hi Edmund, when moving a page to a new title, as you did to Awake my joy, awake I say (Thomas Clark), please check if there are any links pointing to the old title. If you move it without leaving a redirect, these links will become broken (see here, for example). You may either leave a redirect behind, or fix the links to point to the new title. Thanks, —Carlos Email.gif 12:57, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the reminder, Carlos. I've updated A Fifth Set of Psalm Tunes (Thomas Clark), which I'd forgotten to do yesterday (the other pages on the WhatLinksHere list were ones generated from categories, so when the link tables were refreshed, these disappeared from the list). Regards, EJG (talk) 20:03, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
Hi Edmund, indeed most of the links to a works page are dynamic, we usually only have to worry about any links from the composer and text pages. Thanks again, —Carlos Email.gif 04:11, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Category versus text page

Edmund, I've noticed that you've been setting up categories with the same name as some of the text pages I've been creating. I suspect that there is something I am not grasping here, since a search leads to the text page, not the category. This is a request for enlightenment! Would it be more useful for me to create categories, rather than text pages?

Happy new year, by the way. Have finally got to Italy, after having had to rebook flights twice, since we were playing the wellknown Christmas game of "Pass the virus"
Jamesgibb (talk) 18:23, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi James - I hope you have a good trip to Italy. Thankyou for creating the text pages - I'd been setting up the text categories alongside these because the template LinkText on the composition pages, as well as producing a link to the specified text, puts the composition page into a category of the specified name. If that category doesn't exist, it shows up as missing on the composition page (so, for example, Category:This Advent moon shines cold and clear doesn't currently exist, so it appears as a red link on This Advent moon (Jens Klimek). If the category is set up using the template TextPageCat, as I've been doing, this provides a link on the category page to the text page you've set up.
For text pages with lists of settings automatically generated using the template TextSettingsList, the text category forms the basis of that list - it's perhaps not so important where lists of settings are created manually with details of voicings etc, as you've been doing, but might be useful in future as a maintenance check that all settings of a text are listed on the text page. In summary, I don't think it's so much a matter of choosing to have either the text pages or the text categories, but that it's useful to have both, that they are complementary to some extent, and that having both is supported by the way some of the text-related templates are set up at present.
On a related subject (i.e. text pages), at the moment most of our Old Version (Sternhold, Hopkins etc.) and New Version (Tate/Brady) metrical versions of the psalms are included on the respective psalm pages, with details of which version is used in a particular setting given in the list of 'Settings by composers'. Defend me, Lord, from shame is unusual in this respect, being a separate page for the first 6 verses of the New Version metrical Psalm 31. Could we merge Defend me, Lord, from shame back into Psalm 31? Thanks, EJG (talk) 18:00, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

Wakely's O Praise the Lord with hymns of joy

Dear Edmund, I downloaded the Sibelius file of this anthem, thinking that I would create a reduction for my organist, but discovered that Sib7 files are not backward-compatible with Sib6. If you have a chance, could you save the Sib7 score as Sib6 and let me have it or post it? I'll be happy to add the file with the reduction to cpdl when I'm finished. Thank you. Thank you so much! Patricia Pwarrenbaton (talk) 02:15, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

SortWorks

Edmund, you've probably noticed that we've recently been making significant changes to the composer pages. The principal aim of this is to automate, as far as possible, the process of adding new works to the composer pages. Another change is that we are removing the file links from those pages. The reason for this is simple; we have found by experience that, if people upload new version of files, they are automatically added to the works page, but need to be manually altered on the composer page. Most people forget to do this, so we end up with mismatched files.

One side benefit is that, in the past, people sometimes forgot to add their editions to the composer page and the new template picks up all those missing editions, as well as works where the composer is indicated solely as arranger. (My record so far for any composer is 21 missing works, including, shamefully, one of my own editions!) All this is still very much work in progress, particularly for the more complex composer pages, but I would be interested for any feedback you may have, whether positive or negative. Jamesgibb (talk) 09:50, 26 April 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the message, James. I'd noticed the removal of direct links to files from the composer pages, and have removed some of these links in the last few weeks - I agree that this is useful in terms of composer pages not being out of date with respect to what editions have been uploaded, and also so that users can see the information about an edition on the work page before they download it.
Re SortWorks, this is useful for the composers with simpler works lists (I've used it, for example, last month, when setting up the page for Samuel Long), and possibly for some of the more complex ones, especially where there may be editions being contributed by many different editors, none of whom are particularly keeping an eye on maintaining the composer page. However, where editors take a particular interest in certain composers, and actively maintain those composers' pages with structured work lists (for example, including details of works which have not yet been uploaded to CPDL in the lists of works by genre, which may be useful for clarification - especially where there is more than one setting of the same text by a composer), I consider the benefit of automating the works list is substantially outweighed by the drawbacks of being unable to maintain these details as well as in a manually-maintained list. For those composers, it would be better to have a 'partial list' template, behaving in a similar manner to the TextAutoList template which we use on the Psalm pages, that could be put at the end of the manual list of works, and would list only those works which (a) link to the composer in question in the Composer template and (b) have not already been manually linked to from the composer page - these would thus be brought to the editor's attention, and could be added to the detailed lists when the page was next edited. I've set up a template to do this at ComposerAutoList, and think it does what is required - it seems to be working. EJG (talk) 20:24, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, Edmund. Valid points, I think. At the moment, I'm gathering replies from various people and will then share them with the administrators.Jamesgibb (talk) 15:49, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi Edmund, thank you for reversing my attempts at implementing SortWorks for Thomas Clark, Stephen Jarvis, Thomas Jarman, and William Bennett. I apologise for the inconvenience – I am trying to automate those pages not already automated, to help Claude T. out a bit. I wish I had read the above discussion first. I realise now that you have already dealt satisfactorily with this issue for some composers. Which composers do you actively maintain, that I should not try to automate? Is it the list on your page? If not, perhaps you could consider adding those to the "Adopt-a-composer" page. Again, please forgive me for meddling where I shouldn't be. – Barry Johnston (talk) 17:55, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
Hi Barry, thanks for the message. There are certain composers I do tend to take a close interest in and keep an eye on (so if anyone had added pieces that weren't appearing in the right places in the listings, I'd spot this fairly soon). It's not the full list of composers on my user page, as that includes several that I've contributed the odd piece by, but am not particularly focussing on. I'll add the relevant composers to ChoralWiki:Adopt-A-Composer, as I'd neglected to do that before now. Regards, EJG (talk) 18:34, 17 September 2017 (UTC)

DayCat

Hi Edmund, thanks for your arduous work adding this template! I used to automate the creation of those categories, but the server went through so many configuration changes over the years that my bot stopped working and no tweak was able to revive it. Sigh... —Carlos (talk) 01:45, 17 December 2016 (UTC)

You're welcome, Carlos - it's no trouble to me to create a batch of them for a few months from time to time. EJG (talk) 18:56, 2 January 2017 (UTC)

Potential duplication? Gordon Bennett!

Wotcher, I returned recently from the Bodleian with a selection (not the complete volume) of William Bennett's New Set of Psalm Tunes and Anthems, only now to spot that you have already embarked on them. I am two thirds of the way through the Mag and Nunc, and will post that up when finished. Other items (list available) I shall defer pro tem if you want first (?only) crack at them. The Bodleian copy has 100+ pages of manuscript addenda, to which I did not pay much attention, since I could find no definite attribution to any composer. Might this copy (A first set) be the "second" set which you record on the work page as having gone AWOL? Regards, Cjshawcj (talk) 17:05, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for your message - it's good to see someone else taking an interest in William Bennett! Re holding back on the items you'd picked to edit, please don't wait on my account - I'm not in any hurry to be first.
I'm pretty sure the 'Second set of Psalm Tunes and Anthems' listed in the Burnet Morris index is a distinct work from A New Set of Psalm Tunes and Anthems - the MS addenda to the Bod copy of A New Set of Psalm Tunes and Anthems might well include some items from the 'second set', but in the absence of attributions, it's difficult to be sure. Regards, EJG (talk) 16:26, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

Wotcher, I've now posted up the Mag & Nunc and one other item and may post others in due course, but have a fair number of purely instrumental items to process first. The Bod catalogue describes their copy in these terms: "paper label on spine. - MS additions: 14 further anthems added in MS on p. 105-221, all anon. -Provenance...[Thos. G.?] Jackson, Lower Yalberton, Paignton, 1814. I don't know enough about WG to know if these are of interest, or to know to whose attention they might usefully be drawn.Cjshawcj (talk) 16:53, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for the details of the MS additions to the Bod copy. I'll try to get round to looking at it some time - of the researchers within the WGMA, I'm probably the most interested in Bennett (gave a short talk on him at the research meeting they organised in Feb 2016) and I sing with the WG choir in Devon (based in Crediton). Regards, EJG (talk) 16:45, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

Dead Link - Sue Glover Psalmody website

I have just tried to access William East's (? John Everet) Psalm 61 but the link there to Sue Glover's psalmody website is dead.

The very helpful link at the Wayback Internet Archive still has lots of Sue's website available

https://web.archive.org/web/20140528185841/http://gallerymusic.co.uk/contents/mp3.html#bands

Is it feasible to redirect links referring to that site to the archive ?

Regards,

Tim.

Done. Claude (talk) 05:49, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

Many thanks. I wonder if you could also change the link for the article on East's biography on the composer page to

https://web.archive.org/web/20060722204029/http://www.psalmody.co.uk/articles/Glover94.html

It is more informative than the reference to the wikipedia page ! (where that William East of Waltham doesn't get a mention)

Thanks, Tim Tim Henderson (talk) 06:52, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the reminder of this, Tim, and for updating the links to the Sue Glover scores, Claude - I've done the links for East's biography/Wikipedia page EJG (talk) 11:08, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

Composers by year…

Hi, Since I notice the red circa date categories are receiving overdue attention, your input at Category talk:People grouped by birth year would be most welcome! Richard Mix (talk) 19:47, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
