Your edit to Felix Mendelssohn

Hello there. I have just reverted your edit to Felix Mendelssohn because it seemed to break a number of internal links. I noticed that you were trying to add links to some MIDI files. Please do add these links but don't alter the links to score pages as you do it because it will render them broken. If you have any questions about this, please leave your reply here (not on my talk page) and I will get back to you. Regards --Bobnotts talk 23:59, 23 September 2007 (PDT)

Hi Bob, I am sure that your change was well intentioned, but when links are out of date, they NEED to be altered. The information for Elijah scores was (and now is again) horribly out of date. First, the work is now complete (many movements were unfinished when the last previous additions to the links were made), so that the missing movements needed to be added. Second, the links for ALL of my Elijah scores is out of date on the previous (now current) edit. FYI, the correct current link is:

http://vpmag.com/nwc/jrjmend.html

(they are also posted at http://jennings.freehostia.com/Classic/Mendelss/Mendelss.htm along with the MIDI files). Fortunately, people can still get there eventually, since the old Scriptorium page has a link to the current page. Since you should have checked the links before assuming that they were bad, I suggest that you change the page back and then, as a pennance, add links to the introduction and overture (the links are the same as the others). Now if I accidentally changed a link to something that somebody else did, that is quite a different matter (in that case mea culpa). If there is any of that, please let me know specifically what you found, so that I can avoid doing it again. I did some spot checking and everything seemed to be ok. Regards, Jim (James R. Re: Mendelssohn

Hi, If you are watching this space like a hawk, it must be Oscar Hammerstein's hawk that makes lazy circles in the sky. To put it another way, I got tired of waiting. I went ahead and undid the damage that you did by reverting to links that have been outdated for years (literally, I think), and made some other improvements as well. I added links to the "Introduction" and "Overture", and fixed the subsidiary pages too (i. e. Elijah and "two editions available"). Also, the mystery German file is now revealed to English speakers. It is No. 28 "Lift thine eyes". I put it in the proper sequence, but it really belongs on the subsidiary page (i. e. more the one edition). Hey you could do that, since you didn't do your pennance. You may or may not like the formatting that I used on the Elijah page. If you want to change it, that is fine with me, provided that it works. Of course, if you happen to spot something that I have missed (broken link, etc.), well and good.

Rgards,

Hello there, Jim. Firstly, let me say that I enjoyed your humour: very much appreciated! (Sheriff jokes have been few and far between recently.) Secondly, may I apologise for not getting back to you sooner? Unfortunately, I have had some problems with my internet connection which meant that I didn't have any internet access shortly after you left your second message above and as I have just moved back to my University accommodation and begun a new term, there have, of course, been many other things that require my time. In the time that I have had internet access, I have been working up through the edits to the wiki and now I have reached your second message, above.
Now - to the issue in hand. The reason for my reverting your edit was because it created a number of broken (red) links and I mistook these for you breaking existing links rather than creating new (broken) links (which is, I now realise, what you have done).
"Since you should have checked the links before assuming that they were bad, I suggest that you change the page back and then, as a penance, add links to the introduction and overture (the links are the same as the others)."
Firstly, Jim, if you're being serious, nothing is done "as penance" on this site. We are all volunteers and do as much as we are able and/or willing to do. Also, whilst acting in the best intentions of the site, no person can give another a directive to do something - wikis just don't work like that. Simple misunderstandings like my revert above are not uncommon and, just like on Wikipedia, I think it is best to assume good faith. Secondly, it seems that I did not make myself clear in my first post as you say "you should have checked the links before assuming that they were bad". I was in fact referring to the internal wiki links to score pages, not your external links for MIDI files and Noteworthy Composer scores. I reverted the page because of these red links, not because of any external links.
"[...] but it really belongs on the subsidiary page (i. e. more the one edition). Hey you could do that, since you didn't do your penance."
All editions of the same work do indeed belong on the same page but I don't appreciate your off-handed tone and, as I stated above, one user cannot give another an instruction - there is no hierarchy here, just collaboration. The best way to proceed with a project like this is to outline things that need to be done then (hopefully) have people volunteer to do them. Alternatively, suggest that a user might help out with a problem or request their help, not order them to do something.
Now that we've got that out of the way, let's try to sort this page out! I genuinely believe that this was an unfortunate misunderstanding and we both want to make CPDL better. As far as I can see, at the present time, what needs to be done is to create score pages where there are broken links which you created. I don't have the time at the moment to do all of this score submission but I will try to do some later. If you get the chance, please have a look at my draft help page on score submission (you would start at the title "Adding new edition information"). I hope that this will help you understand how the (rather idiosyncratic) score submission process works on CPDL.
Thank you for your scores and sorry for this misunderstanding - I hope that we can proceed to make CPDL better without holding any grudges. May I suggest that discussion continues on Talk:Felix Mendelssohn? --Bobnotts talk 20:48, 4 October 2007 (PDT)

freehostia

Hi Jennings, I noticed that your site address has changed, and ran a find-replace in the remaining links to make them point to the new site, ok? Regards, —Carlos Email.gif 19:19, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi Carlos, I missed some, did I? Oops. The links were indeed ALL supposed to be changed. I don't know what happened at Freehostia, but everything of mine was deleted for reasons unknown. They still have a server, but have not responded to any of my inquiries. Therefore, I found a new host and reconstructed the site there. Thanks for assisting with updating the links. Page flooded with bad popups

Are you aware that your page is flooded with a lot of really ugly popup-windows? --Hofius (talk) 19:52, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
