General information

Publication

Thomas Clark's A Fifth Set of Psalm Tunes, and Two Anthems, With Symphonies and an Instrumental Bass; Also Four Chants was published in London, by Button & Whitaker of 75, St Paul's Church Yard. The dates of operation of the publishers at this address were c1808-14: the Hymn Tune Index estimates that this collection was published c1813. It was, at the latest, published before 18 August 1814, when it was advertised by Button, Whitaker and Beadnell in Trewman's Exeter Flying Post or Plymouth and Cornish Advertiser, issue 2554.

Publication date and place: 1813 by Button and Whittaker in London.

Description of contents

The collection consists of 15 metrical psalm tunes (setting 5 texts from the 'Old Version' of Sternhold & Hopkins, 5 from the 'New Version' of Tate & Brady, and 5 by Isaac Watts), two anthems, and four chants.

The music is laid out in full score with the soprano air next to the bass. The treble clef is used for soprano, alto, and tenor parts, with both the alto and tenor parts being notated an octave above sounding pitch.

A figured instrumental bass is given throughout, with 'symphonies' (short instrumental introductions and interludes) scored for three instruments (the figured bassline plus two instruments of treble pitch). Where these symphonies occur on the same systems as the vocal parts, the first treble instrument part is generally printed on the soprano part, and the second treble instrument on the tenor part.
