Benchè’l misero cor lasso talhora,
Porga breve riposo nutrito di speranza
Long’ affanni cotal rifurg’in me poscia l’ardore,

English.png English translation

Even if the poor heart, sometimes tired,
Takes a short rest, nourished with hope,
Later takes back in me the ardour of long anguishes,
And to my further damage returns, severe, my painful state.

Because the cord of love was so strong,
Which in my first years
Tied my love to my lady and to my fate,
That nothing can untie it, but death.
