The Graduale is sung after the first reading at Masses. It is supposedly so-called from an ancient custom of singing it from the stairs of the pulpit. Unlike the other propers, which take the form of antiphons, the gradual is in responsorial form, and hence sometimes referred to as the "Responsorium", a term more commonly associated with the Liturgy of the Hours.
