Ove me guid’amore.

Tu segui empio tiranno,
ch’ogn’hor con dolce inganno
a morte mena.
Mio desio non frena.

Come Giesù non puoi
frenar gl’affetti tuoi?
Libero sei.
Credi pur ch’io potrei.

Ma un dolce amor si caro
mischia amor nel mio amar
ch’è cagion ch’io
muoro, e morir desio.

Dialogue between Jesus and the soul

Soul: Jesus, where are you going,
looking so sorrowful?
Jesus: Where love directs me.

Soul: You are in thrall to a cruel tyrant
who is trying to lure you to your death.
Jesus: My will cannot be altered.

Soul: How can that be?
Surely you are free to do as you please?
Jesus: You may imagine that I am...
 
...but my affection is such that
love imbues the bitterness
that will cause me to die,
and death is my desire.
