Een meysken eens voerby passeerde,
aan hoerde eenen soeten rel,
Hoe dat een meysken diviseerde,
teghen een haere nichte soe wel.
Commeeret wel naer uwen rel,

Commeere, commeere, commeeret wel,
Commeeret wel met moede fel,
d'eene commeere kent d'ander wel.

Men soude niet moeghen een baeyken draghen,
ghemaeckt al naer den nieuwen snee.
Men soude dees commeere moeten vraghen,
of sy moyen haer altyts me.
Speelt uwen rel, commeret wel.
Commere, compere, voucht dat niet wel,

Wy sullent draghen en niemant vragen,
triumpheren achterste, want tvoucht ons wel,
Commere, compere, voucht dat niet wel,
naer uwen rel, commeret wel:

Commeret wel naer uwen rel,

d'eene commeere kent d'ander wel.

Once a girl was passing by
And heard some chatter: natter, natter.
Two cousins standing there did vie
To get most words in: chitter, chatter.
Gossip as the hours go by,
Gossiping will make time fly.
Gossip as the hours go by,
Behind another’s back, oh my,
Gossiping will make time fly.

You shouldn’t wear the latest gown,
For some will say that it’s a sin.
It only makes the gossips frown:
They always stick their noses in.
Gossip as the hours go by,
Gossips know the reason why:
Gossiping will make time fly.

We shall wear it if we choose:
It suits us well for all your chatter.
You should mind your Ps and Qs,
We don’t care how much you natter.
Gossip as the hours go by –
Twisted truths, an outright lie –
Gossips know the reason why:
Gossiping will make time fly.
