German text
1 Groß ist der Herr und hoch gepreist in der Stadt, die Gotts eigen heißt,
auf seinem heil'gen Berg wie ein schön Zweiglein ist Zion,
das ganze Land hat Trostdavon.
2 Dem Berg Zion liegt an der Seit geg'n Mitternacht gar schön bereit
des großen Königs Stadt, Gott unser Schutz und Trutz genannt,
in ihr'n Palästen ist bekannt.
3 Obgleich König mit ihrer Macht sie zu bekriegen hab'n gedacht,
ist doch nichts worden d'raus, all Feind zu Wasser und zu Land
zerstreuet Gottes starke Hand.
5 Dies rühmten unser Väter sehr, und wir erfahrens noch viel mehr
an Gottes Kirch und G'mein, daß sie kein Feind bewältigt nicht,
denn Gott erhält sie ewiglich.
9 Damit auch wird in künft'ger Zeit des Herren Lob weit ausgebreit
und man von ihm stets sag: Der Herr ist ewig unser Gott,
er führt uns wie die Jugend gut.
