Edition notes: This edition is transposed up a tone, which still takes Tenor One no higher than e' and should sound less muddy. Two notes altered editorially, as indicated in the score, and words in the 'O benigna' section standardised. In the triple-time section, the original note values have been retained (as in the duple-time sections too), but the semibreve should no doubt be of much the same duration as a fairly brisk crotchet nowadays.

Description: Anonymous motet from Attaingnant's Fourth Book of motets. The second voice down is an occasionally decorated cantus firmus part. The clefs in the source were C4, C4, F3, F4, so this is very much a male voice work, suggestive of two tenors, baritone and bass. One curiosity is that, where the standard text would have had 'O benigna, O regina, O Maria', the partbooks all have 'O benigna' three times, while the music is identical for each, consisting simply of four block chords. This strongly suggests that the words, at least, should have been different each time, as in other settings of the same text, but that the printer made an error. According to Geneviève B. Bazinet’s 2013 thesis, ‘Pierre Attaingnant’s Encyclopedia of Sacred Music: The 1534-1539 Motet Series’, which is a veritable goldmine of information about the series, this setting of Inviolata is identified in another source as the work of Jean Courtois.
