Biography

Juan Matias de Rivera is barely more than a name on the manuscript of a four part mass in the Música Colonial Archive. In his catalogue of that archive, US musicologist Robert Stevenson refers to another manuscript in the archive, attributed to "de Rivera", as indicating that the composer was a choirmaster in Oaxaca, Mexico. Juan Matias de Rivera may or may not have been the same person. It is also possible that he may have been the composer of the Missa quarti toni which is attributed in the archive, probably spuriously, to Allegri. There are similarities in style between the two works and they appear one after the other in the same section of the archive catalogue.
