Ensam jag skrider fram på min bana.

Längre och längre sträcker sig vägen.

Ack, uti fjärran döljes mitt mål!

Dagen sig sänker, nattlig blir rymden.

Snart blott de eviga stjärnor jag ser.

Men jag ej klagar den flyende dagen.

Ej mig förfärar (den) stundande natten.

Ty av den kärlek, som går genom världen,

föll ock en strimma in i min själ.

THE NOCTURNAL SKY (Translation by Eva Toller, 2003)

Alone I walk forth on my path.

The road goes ever on and on.

Lo! in the far beyond my destination is hidden!

Twilight is falling, the spheres turn nocturnal.

Soon I can only perceive the eternal stars.

But I do not lament the vanishing day.

I am not appalled by the approaching night;

for I, too, received into my soul

a gleam of that love that journeys across the world.
