家 家 紅 燈 掛 門 前

風 吹 燈 籠 禿 螺 螺 的 轉
吉 利 話 兒 聽 不 完
見 著 人 兒 把 腰 彎

Soprano

Let's all welcome the New year in.
Look! Look left!
Gongs, drums, fireworks and crackers now ringing through the sky.
Quick home! A red light shines out,
Pin the words onto the door.
The wind blows the lamp, the smoke twists high.
The words were more than I could bear.
I bow in respect to all I meet.

¦¦:
Get rich! Get rich! Get rich!
Congratulations, such a large fortune!

Say prosperity be yours!
Call the riches to come in.
¦1
Cough! cough! cough! cough! yo!
 :¦¦
¦2
Cough! cough! cough! cough! yo!

All the best and better days are coming,
Yes, the good days shall come!
All shout: Lang may yer lum reek°!

Alto

Look! Look left!
Gongs, drums, fireworks now ringing through the sky.

° A reference to the smoke caused by the wind earlier in the paraphrase. A lum is a chimney, and as long as it is reeking (smoking) it indicates that there is prosperity in the house. It seems fitting that this old Scottish blessing be shouted out in an English paraphrase of the Chinese text which is really all about material prosperity in the new year.
