General information

Now in a song of grateful praise is a hymn attributed to Samuel Medley. John Julian, in his Dictionary of HymnologyLink to the English Wikipedia article (p722, 2nd edition, 1907), states that it was published in the June 1776 issue of The Gospel MagazineLink to the English Wikipedia article, but it is not found there. It was included as Hymn CXXXIII in the 29th edition of George Whitefield's A Collection of Hymns for Social Worship, London: 1785, as Hymn 374 in John Dobell's A New Selection of Seven Hundred Evangelical Hymns, Morristown: 1810, and as Hymn 301 in A Select Collection of Hymns, to be universally sung in all the Countess of Huntingdon's Chapels, London: 1815.

1  NOW in a Song of grateful Praise
To my dear Lord my Voice I'll raise,
With all his Saints I'll join to tell,
My Jesus has done all Things well.

2  All Worlds his glorious Power confess,
His Wisdom all his Works express:
But O his Love! what Tongue can tell!
My Jesus has done all Things well.

3  How sov'reign, wonderful and free,
Has been his Love to sinful Me!
This pluck'd me from the Jaw of Hell,
My Jesus has done all Things well.

4  I spurn'd his Grace, I broke his Laws;
And yet he undertook my Cause,
To save me, tho' I did rebell;
My Jesus has done all Things well.

5  And since my Soul has known his Love,
What Mercies has he made me prove;
Mercies which do all Praise excell;
My Jesus has done all Things well.

6  Whene'er my Saviour and my God,
Has on me laid his gentle Rod;
I know in all that has befell,
My Jesus has done all Things well.

7  Tho' many a fiery flaming Dart
The Tempter levels at my Heart;
With this I all his Rage repell,
My Jesus has done all Things well.

8  Sometimes my Lord his Face does hide
To make me pray, or kill my Pride;
Yet then it on my Mind does dwell,
My Jesus has done all Things well.

9  Soon shall I pass the vail of Death,
And in his Arms shall lose my Breath;
Yet then my happy Soul shall tell,
My Jesus has done all Things well.

10  And when to that bright World I rise,
And join the Anthems in the Skies;
Above the rest this Note shall swell,
My Jesus has done all Things well!

1  Now in a song of grateful praise
To my dear Lord my voice I'll raise:
With all his saints I'll join to tell,
My Jesus hath done all things well.

2  How sov'reign, and how great his love;
What mercies hath he made me prove!
Mercies which do all praise excel;
My Jesus hath done all things well.

3  When call'd to pass the vale of death,
If in his arms I lose my breath,
O then my happy soul will tell,
My Jesus hath done all things well.

4  So when to yon bright world I rise,
And join the anthems in the skies,
Above the rest this note shall swell:
My Jesus hath done all things well.
