Edition notes: Transcribed from 1545 print. Original key (chiavi naturali) and note values. Alto in octave transposed violin clef. Though the Quintus is notated in baritone clef, its range is almost identical with the tenor, so both voices are notated using the same clef.

General Information

Title: Nunc cognovi Domine
Composer: Cipriano de Rore
Lyricist: 1 Kings 10:6-9, Luke 15:19 (slightly paraphrased)create page

Number of voices: 6vv   Voicing: SATTTB
Genre: SacredMotet

Language: Latin
Instruments: A cappella

First published: 1545 in Motetta 5vv, no. 19
Description: The choice of text is very peculiar. The first part of the text is taken from the words of the Queen of Shaba to Solomon, and it is a praising a ruler, whereas the text taken from the story of the prodigal son asks for a job, just as the Sextus which only sings the text Fac me sicut unum ex mercenariis tuis. It is possible that Rore composed this motet to a patron (a ruler) by whom he hoped to find employment.

Nunc cognovi, Domine,

ut faceres iudicium et iustitiam;
et tu, Domine,
fac me sicut unum ex mercenariis tuis.
