Composer and source

Freeman Lewis didn't compose very much. I was unable to find this tune in his Beauties of Harmony 1813-1820. The closest I could find is Gratitude in Ananias Davisson's Supplement to the Kentucky Harmony, 1820, where it is ascribed to "F. Lewis". (Davisson dropped Gratitude in later editions of SKH, substituting New Salem without the attribution to Lewis.)

Davisson's Gratitude is based actually on Davis (Anonymous), first published in Wyeth's Repository, Part Second in 1813, and in many books following, including Southern Harmony (1835). Lowens (1964) says the tune in Wyeth is a folk hymn; New Salem is a variation on this tune, likely from the same oral source. I think the tune should be Composer:Anonymous with a start date of 1813, and assigned to Category:Folk hymns, and linked to and from Davis (Anonymous). — Barry Johnston (talk) 14:22, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
