General information

The title page of Matthew Cooke's Twelve Psalm Tunes describes the collection as 'Composed for the Use of the Church, at NORTH MIMS; & with the utmost Respect Dedicated to the most Noble PRINCE Francis, Duke of Leeds; &c. &c. &c. BY Matthew Cooke, Organist of North Mims, Hertfordshire, of St Georges, Bloomsbury London and Musician to the Right Honble the Ladies Capell.

The collection was 'Printed for the Author by Henry Holland, at his Music Warehouse St James's Street Piccadilly', London. While the book is undated, the Hymn Tune Index estimates a publication date of c1791, noting that Cooke obtained the post of organist at St. George's, Bloomsbury in 1788, and that the dates of activity of the publisher at this address were 1789-c1793.

Publication date and place: 1791 by Henry Holland in London.

In addition to the twelve psalm tunes, all of which are settings of metrical psalm texts (eleven of them strophic, and one a through-composed setting of Ps. 137 in the metrical Old Version), the collection includes two Christmas hymns.
