One way might be to provide a bare bones multicategory search that allows searches of the form
(category:11 OR ... OR Category:1n)

easy enough to write the generic DPL code: each line is of the form: category=i1 | ... | category=in (each line like this does the "OR" part),
and each separate line corresponds to "AND".
