duplicate CPDL numbers

Hi Claude,

CPDL No 23695 Magnificat I (Anonymous) and CPDL No 38837 Magnificat (Tr91) (Anonymous) appear at first glance to be identical, except for the introductory page. If one is deleted, is there a reason for picking one edition number over the other? All the best, Richard Mix (talk) 09:32, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi, Richard. Do you mean it is the same work? Better merge two editions on the same page, then. Even better ask the editor himself. Claude (talk) 11:02, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

Dorico source files

Hi,

I uploaded a new edition of Full fathom five (Charles Wood), but my source file is in Steinberg Dorico format (.dorico), which doesn't appear to be supported yet... any chance of allowing this format. I also tried .xml for a Music XML file which also doesn't seem to be allowed.

Also, when adding the new edition I originally changed the capitalisation of the title, which created a new page. I think I've sorted it by adding again with the correct capitalisation, and editing the wrong one to be a REDIRECT to the correct one... but you might like to check it's all OK now - it certainly looks OK from the front end! Tristanpye (talk) 17:17, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi, Tristan, thanks for your contributions to CPDL. I completed the redirect, deleting the old page with three capital letters. Didn't know about Dorico format. But for the XML one, please just "zip" it (or export it directly) into MXL format and it will be accepted (and encouraged) by CPDL. Claude (talk) 17:23, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
Dorico is Steinberg's new score editor (written by the team that wrote Sibelius until Avid got rid of them) - it was only released a few weeks ago.
Can I easily add file formats to the existing entry (how?), or do I need to upload a file separately and then edit the page source manually? Tristanpye (talk) 17:33, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
Speaking of a MXL (zipped XML) file, just click in the left panel, on "import a file" (under "Tools"). Then, on the work page, edit the 'Music files section', add, on the right of your PDF: [[Media:Charles_Wood_-_Full_Fathom_Five.mxl|{{XML}}]]. Thanks, Claude (talk) 17:41, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

Michael Haydn Te Deum

Hi, Michael Haydn wrote several works with this title. I have changed the title of my edition of MH28 to include the MH28 number - but it doesn't show through in the main title. Can you fix? Many thanks Malcolm Crowe (talk) 21:46, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

Done. Claude (talk) 22:01, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

Legend (again)

Hi Claude, I have been working on Template:Legend again. See what you think about these two suggestions. I worked on the one dated 2017-02-04, so you would have room for expansion, which seems to happen often. Feel free to use or discard as you see fit. Cheers — Barry Johnston (talk) 04:03, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Barry, well done! I like the table much and it fits the page width, right to the sponsors' column even on my iPad. You should perhaps delete the line between icons and software names. About increasing the number of icons, I don't see more icons needed for internal files. Regarding external ones, I'll add an "external NWCs" today but other occurrences are too few to deserve another icon in the legend. You should perhaps open a thread in the forums to get more advices, from admins and users. Friendly, Claude (talk) 08:54, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
Hi Claude, I will start the thread in forums. Thanks. But now I notice there's an extra "File" icon after every icon on every work page. — Barry Johnston (talk) 15:18, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
As I've just added Icon_zip_globe.gif and, some time ago, Personal_Composer_icon.png and Personal_Composer_globe.png (Personal Composer), I wonder if, with Icon_pdf.gif above and Icon_pdf_globe.gif below, etc., we'll have two rows in almost every column, and a narrower table. ;-) Claude (talk) 15:07, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
I will work on that. I wonder if it would be better if someone (maybe me) could write a more complex script for Template:Legend, so that the legend on a work page would include only those icons which appear on that page. I will give it a try, but I will need some help. — Barry Johnston (talk) 16:47, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

SiteNotice

Hi Claude, could you please update the French translations in MediaWiki:Contribnotice/fr and MediaWiki:Visitornotice/fr to reflect the changes in their English counterparts? Thanks! —Carlos (talk) 03:50, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

Thanks, Carlos. I saw these changes yesterday and didn't change anything because all the text is correct, congrats. But 1. the notice never appears in French, it's always in English, like the upper part of the left panel, not the lower part (Tools) that is displayed in French! 2. Even when I'm connected, it's the visitor's notice that is shown. See that screen capture. Claude (talk) 05:57, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
That's strange! Maybe Max can shed some light on what is happening here. But I insist that the messages above require update, please compare them carefully with the English ones: MediaWiki:Contribnotice and MediaWiki:Visitornotice. —Carlos (talk) 19:32, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

Palestrina - Dei mater alma

Cordialement, Claude (talk) 15:34, 24 June 2017 (UTC)
Merci, Claude! Jkelecom (talk) 15:37, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

Newbie, MuseScore

Hi Claude, thanks for your welcome. I have just put up Antonio Caldara's Miserere mei (it seems to be alright, but ....), Horror of horrors, CPDL would not accept .mscz files from MuseScore - changed from Noteworthy some time ago and I miss its simplicity of notation entry. Désolé, mais puisque la page était en anglais ... Merci pour votre accueil Tiny Trouble (talk) 10:41, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Tony (or Andrew?), don't worry about .mscz files: they'll soon be accepted, so you may choose the central button that allows to upload mscz files anyway (or think that .mxl files can be opened by users of MuseScore and quite all other music edition softwares).
I'm about to create your editor's page. Should it be entitled Andrew Thoday or Tony Tebby? Claude (talk) 13:23, 8 July 2017 (UTC)
It would probably be better as Andrew Thoday (= and rue the day... - et regretter le jour...). I am known as Tony Tebby in another domain, but I am Anthony Tebby in my état civil so while I am almost always known as T.T. I am officially A.T. Tiny Trouble (talk) 18:22, 8 July 2017 (UTC)
Tiny Trouble (talk) 17:07, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
You're welcome, Tony. When one adds a manual work-line on a composer's page, it disappears from the automatic list below. Claude (talk) 17:22, 10 July 2017 (UTC)

Laudate Dominum

Erreur dans le titre de cette oeuvre. Je n'arrive pas à la corriger. Mille pardons! Jonathang (talk) 12:52, 22 July 2017 (UTC)

No problem, Jonathan. It's done: http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Laudate_Dominum_omnes_gentes_(Francisco_Valls) Claude (talk) 13:48, 22 July 2017 (UTC)

Work Sorter

Hi Claude. Can you explain for me what this does? Jamesgibb (talk) 18:03, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

Yes, it's easy: the pages that have that template will appear in the lists (like Category:Sheet music) according to the 'intelligent' sorting order: without grouping by definite or indefinite article (when at the beginning), that is, according to Wiki international rules. 'House', 'A house' and 'The house' are thus gathered. WorkSorter is for the works pages, NameSorter for the composers ones. Claude (talk) 18:18, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

Pages not using SortWorks

Hi Claude, I appreciate the concern you wrote on the Talk:Orlando di Lasso about the pages not using SortWorks. You wrote:

" I hate, each morning, having to check if someone has added a new work and has forgotten to add it to the composer manual-list of works. List of problematic pages is here."

Orlando di Lasso is off your list (at least until someone protests). Of the ones still on your list, the following are automated by dpl -- I can take care of these:

  • Daniel Belknap
  • Daniel Read
  • Jacob French
  • Oliver Holden
  • Samuel Babcock
  • Samuel Holyoke
  • Stephen Jenks
  • Timothy Swan
  • William Billings

I wish I could take more off your list, I will do a few as I have time. I appreciate all you do. Thanks! — Barry Johnston (talk) 20:37, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

My list shows only those pages that have no {{SortWorks}} at all. When it is used for a part of the works, like {{SortWorks|Sacred}}, like di Lasso's one, it is not shown in the list. But the manual part of the page can be incomplete. To be more precise, Max has implemented a template, {{Recent_additions}}, that EVER adds, on top of the composer page, the work-page title where a new EDITION has been added. But it is not added in due place and, above all, it creates superfluous duplicated line(s) when SortWorks is used and each time it is the second (or more) edition. And 'somebody' has to check the string "Recent_additions" from time to time, to delete the duplicates. Sincerely, I also do appreciate all what you do. Claude (talk) 06:27, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

LinkText and larger works

Hi Claude,

The LinkText template at Three Motets, Op. 69 (Felix Mendelssohn) is causing TextAutoList to add the Larger work page to text pages that already include Op. 69 No. 1, Op. 69 No. 2 and Op. 69 No. 3. Do you have a better solution than mine? Richard Mix (talk) 15:14, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

No, I reverted my edit. Claude (talk) 15:29, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

Johann Michael Haydn: Tribulationes cordis mei MH453

Hi, I am sorry - Pablo Rosario had already added this work. Can the pages be merged? Best wishes Malcolm Crowe (talk) 17:26, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

No problem, Malcolm, I've merged your edition on the old page, but renamed it as you did, with MH number. Feel free to add something I'd forgotten. Claude (talk) 18:57, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

MuseScore and link

Hi, and thanks for the welcome.

I finally got around to uploading my first score - long time user who has been wanting to give sth back and all that, you know. Of course I made lots of mistakes, and have some questions, such as:

1. I did not follow the guidelines for file naming, but couldn't find a way to rename the files.

2. I uploaded a MuseScore version of the file as well, and although MuseScore is now in the list of formats in the dropdown on the file upload page, it came out as a text link with the full file name. I changed that to read MuseScore instead - is that ok? Or should I just wait for an admin to do whatever needs to be done?

3. Should I include an xml file as well? (I guess I should, eh? Silly question - disregard) Eyolf (talk) 19:33, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Eyolf. A warmful welcome to CPDL. Thanks for your contributions. My answers below:
1. Files are stored on our servers according to their names, so you can update their content very often and easily replace an obsolete version by an updated one, keeping it *the same name*. Consider that the name itself is not so important.
2. MuseScore files aren't yet in the list but will enter it soon. I just added the corresponding icon: MuScor.png.
3. Yes, please add an MXL (compressed XML) file for each edition, just because many more users can open them than a source file from any of each music notation software.

Work name snafu

I just uploaded a metrical Magnificat (#48679) and it came into conflict with a previously submitted Magnificat (#29649). I didn't think to have a descriptor after the title when I filled in the Add Work form. So naturally the new Mag picks up the files from the earlier one. An attempt to change the info of the earlier on back, changes the new one to be the same thing. I ran into this last year with two settings of Psalm 1, with texts by different authors. Would you be able to amend the title of #48679 to "Magnificat (Webber)"? Thanks! I have a Nunc Dimittis to upload later, and for it I shall make sure I remember to add a descriptor to the title in the Add Work form. Tweedfour (talk) 18:13, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi, Thurlow. Thank you for your contributions. I just created that page, where you'll be able to replace all the infos by the ones you received by mail. Feel free to give me another descriptor for that page and/or for the previous one. Claude (talk) 19:37, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, Claude. Am I correct in thinking that I need to change the "Magnficat" in the Chris Webber section to read "Magnificat II" and then proceed with entering the Works entry data pasted into the page you linked? I just did trial of that, and in the preview the "Magnificat II" showed in red, as it normally would for a new entry. Tweedfour (talk) 20:54, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
