Born: 5 March 1748

Died: 25 January 1829

Biography

William Shield was born in Swalwell, Gateshead. He was predominantly a composer of theatrical music, but also contributed psalm tunes to William Dechair Tattersall's collection Improved Psalmody. He succeeded William Parsons as Master of the King's Musick in 1817, and held the post until his death in 1829. He is buried with Johann Peter Salomon in the south cloisters of Westminster Abbey.
