Description: Original harmonization of Tune: Near the Cross, 76. 76. 66. 76, by Willam H. Doane (1832-1915). Words by Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915), 1869. This hymn may also be sung by a male choir, voiced ATBarB, with the top part being sung down an octave by the Baritones and the alto part sung by the high tenors (male altos/countertenors). While originally conceived as an a cappella setting, a version (with the same harmonization) with piano accompaniment was subsequently composed in which the piano right hand is intended to evoke the "precious fountain … healing stream" - the "rest behond the river."

Fanny J. Crosby
Jesus, keep me near the cross,
There a precious fountain
Free to all, a healing stream
Flows from Calvary’s mountain.

Refrain:
In the cross, in the cross,
Be my glory ever;
Till my raptured soul shall find
Rest beyond the river.

Near the cross, a trembling soul,
Love and mercy found me;
There the bright and morning star
Sheds its beams around me.

Refrain

Near the cross! O Lamb of God,
Bring its scenes before me;
Help me walk from day to day,
With its shadows o’er me.

Refrain

Near the cross I’ll watch and wait
Hoping, trusting ever,
Till I reach the golden strand,
Just beyond the river.

Refrain
