General Information

Title: Rabbits All Around
Composer: Maggie Furtak

Number of voices: 3vv   Voicing: SAT
Genre: SecularChildren's song

Language: English
Instruments: A cappella

First published: 2013
Description: This piece is begun with a solo, ideally for a small child. Light accompaniment for very small singers is fine, with the rest of the piece a cappella. The rest of the piece is a round with a few added harmonies, which should be fairly easy for adults, and could be do-able for a talented children's choir that is comfortable working a cappella. No particular difficulties of range, rhythm, or intervals, but the voice leading isn't conventional and there are a few major seconds in the harmonies. I'd love to hear any feedback you have about this piece. What you enjoyed, what seemed needlessly difficult or poorly marked… Enjoy!

Every summer long ears grow
in between the garden rows;
gobbled up by dandy lions:
tabby cats with regal lines.

Bitter, bitter and sweet,
red sky in the morning,
bitter, bitter and sweet,
all small souls take warning.

But dandelions the bunnies eat,
and bitter greens make bunnies sweet,
so when you tremble the long grass,
little rabbit, you may pass.

So bitter, bitter and sweet,
oh, what is the matter?
Bitter, bitter and sweet,
all the bunnies scatter.

Every summer long ears grow
in between the garden rows.
Let no harm fall upon the head
of she who weeds my radish bed.
