General information

Henricus Glareanus' Dodecachordon (Glareani ΔΩΔΕΚΑΧΟΡΔΟΝ) is a theoretical work, richly illustrated with complete pieces by numerous other composers as examples, making it an important anthology. The title refers to Glarean's enlargement of the traditional 8 modes to 12, the 4 authentic modes on D, E, F, & G and their plagal forms on A, B, C, & D being augmented by Aeolian & Ionian authentic modes on A and C with corresponding Hypo-aeolian & Hypo-ionian plagal modes, as well as a theoretical Hyper-aeolian/Hyper-phrygian pair on B/F.
