Biography

Thomas Peter Murphy was born in Ireland, trained as a musician, and became organist for the private chapel of Charles, second Earl of Gainsborough in Lincolnshire, England. He eloped with Lady Blanche, eldest daughter of Charles, and soon departed England to New York and relocated to North Conway, New Hampshire. He became a teacher of music and French in the Kearsarge School for Boys and was organist at Christ Church, Episcopal. After Blanche’s early death in 1881, he spent some time in Massachusetts. He died in Boston. His compositions include a handful of small pieces.
