Monteverdi Translations: Fourth Book

Hello

I see that translations I created and added on an external site (belonging to me) (http://marshall.charles.googlepages.com/) were deleted on 16th June 2008. Is that decision final, or is there the possibility that they could, at my request, be reinstated?

Hi Marshall, your translations are most welcome on CPDL! But when people come here searching for a title and find a link, they expect to see a musical edition on that page, not just the lyrics or translations, so there's no point in creating a "score" page for the text only (or worse, just a link to an external page). If I may suggest something, you could create a page on CPDL that would gather all your translations for works that have no individual pages created yet, so that your intelectual work will still be available. Have a look at ChoralWiki:Translations/Swithinbank and if you like the idea, just click here to start your own page! Regards, —Carlos  14:53, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Sorry to be picky but...

I have some proposals that might eventually get around this problem, but they are still in the formative stage and would require extensive "recataloguing" of CPDL data.

Can't upload .sib files

Currently we can't upload Sibelius files (.sib extension)

Hi John, the problem seems to be fixed now, we had to tweak some configuration files for them to recognize Sibelius (and Encore) files. —Carlos  06:28, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Reverted your edit

Hi Carlos and Rob. The problem was extra space (blankline & return) between the commented out stuff at the top and the includeonly section, which is why I think that putting stuff in comments inside a template is dangerous. -- Chuck_talk Giffen_♫ 22:29, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

That's weird... then the <includeonly> section doesn't work as expected. But I still think comments are a good thing, the stuff I wrote in it is not intended for the ordinary users and could possibly just confound them. —Carlos  01:40, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Relative link to the BB

Hi Carlos, I noted in the "recent changes" page that you made the link to the BB relative. This is OK at the moment when we have both the wiki and the BB at choralwiki.net, but I'm not sure this will be the final condition as operations with two servers (one hosting the wiki and one hosting the BB, with reciprocal back-up) remain the objective. The relative link may need to be reverted to absolute in the future. --Choralia 06:02, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Max, the "relative" BB address is not related to the current Wiki server, but to a particular system configuration page, i.e., MediaWiki:Discussions-url. The idea is to have just one place to alter whenever the BB address changes, so that maintenance is easier. —Carlos  21:25, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Verse template

Hey Carlos,

thanks for formatting the verse numbers from the passion - I didn't know the command "verse". I did this text editing because now there are no requests for french texts left; it looked easy for me, but the text of the whole passion took a "little bit" of time. But now, together with your formatting it is really nice!! Now I have to go to bed - next rehearsal is on 10 a.m.!!  :-( Regards,

Text pages

Definitely a good idea to move back to regular pages than categories. But now, perhaps it would be a good idea to have an optional variable for the TextSettingsList template for number of columns? The lists on Kyrie and O salutaris hostia would benefit from being in 2 or 3 columns. --Bobnotts talk 14:06, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Yes Rob, the text categories started appearing as subcategories of the new "<language> translations" categories and it looked awkward. The optional number of columns is now available as the second parameter. —Carlos  17:33, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi Rob, I created those pages based on 3 Finale files he had uploaded, from which I created the PDF and MIDI files. A few days later he wrote me thanking for having created the pages and asking for some technical help. His email address was then included in his user page. Your changes of the works of Georg Friedrich Händel

Hi Carlos,

as I'm a nearly new member of the active "staff", I look at the changes very carefully to learn how things in CPDL are done. I saw that you changed many works of George Frideric Handel to a uniform name, which surely is a very good idea. But if you don't mind, I would like to discuss a question with you which is a little bit "special", because Handel is a very famous composer in Great Britain, and many English-speaking people think that he was an English composer. His most famous "Halleluja", as I know, is nearly a "second national anthem". So, probably I'm touching a sensitive point (?).

But as a German, I wonder why the name of Georg Friedrich Händel (!) is spelled in the English way. He was born in Germany, and his name, as far as I know, was never changed. Even the first names are spelled "wrong". To solve the problem of the letter "ä", which is not used in many languages, in Germany it is (officially) written as "ae".

As a German musician, I would never search for "Handel" if I looked for "Händel". Whenever I see the name "Handel", I would assume that someone meant "Handl" (= Jacobus Gallus) and left a letter.

Even the meanings of his two names are different: The word "Händel" in German means "quarrel", the word "Handel" means "trade".

Is it useful to change names to an English spelling in general ("John Sebastian Buck"? "Louis of Batehouven"? "Joseph Wheredee"?)? Or does it just make sense in the case of the "English national composer" Händel/Handel?

I am very interested in your opinion, and I hope that you can understand my bad English. With kind regards,
