== Add New Work form – Instruments ==

Hi, Carlos--<br>
Hi Carlos, A few minutes ago I used the Add New Work form to create [[Sharon (James P. Carrell)]]. Since it is an ''a cappella'' work, I entered that in the Instruments blank. But when I got to the page, there was an error message across the top, about a missing ) in a Multireplace.php program. The page was created correctly, except Instruments was blank. I tried inserting ''A cappella'' in the Instruments template, but it didn't work, I got the same message. I managed to get around it by typing <tt><noWiki>'''Instruments:'''{{Acap}}</noWiki></tt>, which gave the same result, it appears (the page was added to Category:A cappella). By the way, I looked at Template:Instruments and noticed that it was editable by me; it should be protected, right? (I did not edit it). Anyway, I thought you should know that this happened. Hi Carlos: After a long period of neglect, someone reminded me that my edition of the Monteverdi Magnificat Secondo is missing a verse. Its CPDL number is 26082.

Thanks.

Hi Carlos. You added an overlooked edition of [http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php?title=Thanks_Be_to_God_%28No._20_from_%27Elijah%27%29_%28Felix_Mendelssohn%29&diff=225879&oldid=215835 Mendelssohn's ''Thanks be to God''] a couple of days ago. As you're no doubt aware, the PDF is a scan of hand-written sol-fa notation and because of this, I don't think we should be hosting this "edition". In the context of CPDL, the word edition means several things, particularly that it should be typeset. The majority of CPDL users will expect such typeset editions and I believe this is a good place to draw the line for "admission criteria" to allow only typeset scores. Hi Carlos, I yesterday uploaded a new edition of this work, thank you for refining the page. Please note that, in my opinion, splitting the page for this work into two pages (one for edition #9437 and one for editions #14586 and #20896) may not be correct, as the work is the same. They look different as one edition is notated in 3/4 and the others are notated in 6/4, however they are almost identical in the soprano part (minor differences exist at bar 11, 19 and 30 if you refer to bar numbers edition #9437). Harmonization of the other parts is different instead, however I think this is not sufficient to consider them as different works. So, I would propose to merge the two pages into a single work page. Max a.k.a. [[User:Choralia|Choralia]] 11:13, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
== Bug in template PostedOn ==

:Hi Max, the soprano part is in fact almost identical, but only because it is the hymn tune proper, based on which each harmonization was created. Now, if we could prove that one of these harmonizations was made by the editor, then I'd see no problem in re-merging the works, stating that one of the editions is an arrangement. On the other side, there is a good chance that Praetorius, a very prolific composer, made the two harmonizations for different occasions, in which case I support that they be kept in separate pages, as we currently do for different harmonizations of Bach's Chorales. —[[User:Carlos|Carlos]]&nbsp;[{{fullurl:User talk:Carlos}} {{mail}}] 16:09, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
Hi Carlos.  I think your 'localizing' the month changes to PostedOn have resulted in an error. Today (October 26th), PostedOn lists my score [[A Hymn for St Cecilia (Charles H. Giffen)]], but the score was posted on September 26th, not October 26th.  The problem is that I also posted editions for the instrumental parts on October 1st, and that seems to have fooled the template PostedOn, which looks at the posting day (26) for one edition and the month (10) for another edition and decides that a score was posted on 10-26. I only noticed this because today my work is listed at the beginning of the works posted for today (2018-10-26), since it is first alphabetically.  Here is the result of <nowiki>{{PostedOn|2018-10-26}}</nowiki> (which will probably only be valid for today (or perhaps until the end of the month?).
*{{tl|PostedOn|2018-10-26}}
I'm hesitant to revert your changes, since I'm busy enough today that I won't have time to test any reversion.  Could you check into the problem? Thanks. :Hi Chuck. You're right, the template tests for the day and the month separately, as far as I can remember. That could potentially give the results you cite, in that very specific situation. There's certainly room for improvement! I'll have a look at it as soon as I can, but feel free to make any corrections if you already envision a solution for it. == ScoreError changes ==
Dear Carlos,

Hi Carlos.  I see you changed [[Template:ScoreError]].  While I like the idea of making the yellow lighter (less obtrusive), I think it might be just a bit too light now.  As for using span instead of table, I find the border that span produces on each line somewhat annoying and inconsistent from page to page (sometimes the border at the bottom of one line overlaps the border at the top of the following line, but sometimes it doesn't creating a double border effect).  Moreover, the inline use of the template with span causes awkward appearance when a short error report starts at the end of one line and ends near the beginning of the following line.  It was for these reasons that I changed the template to use a boxed (table) format: the only border is around the entire error message (not appearing between lines with inconsistent widths due to overlapping or nonoverlapping), and the "dangling" effect from one line to the next for short summaries.  I'm going to darken slightly the yellow now, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on the boxed ''versus'' spanned versions. Thanks! -- [[User:CHGiffen|Chuck]][[User talk:CHGiffen|<small>'''talk'''</small>]]&nbsp;[[User:Charles H. Giffen|Giffen]][[Charles H. Giffen|'''♫''']] 17:13, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
I was wondering if it were possible for me to see some statistics (downloads etc) of my contributions? I get the occasional question from a user who took the effort to find my contact, but that doesn't give much information.

:Hi Chuck, thanks for asking, after changing the template I came up with yet other ideas that I'd like to discuss with you. First of all, the border overlapping was unexpected, since I had adjusted the line height so that it should not happen, but after you said that, I made a test and noticed that in I.E. it still overlaps (though not in Firefox). The idea in changing back from table to span was that many users add the ScoreError template in the '''Edition notes''' line, but when "table" is used, it automatically adds a line break, moving the error notice to the line below: conf. [[Ave Maria a 4 (Josquin des Prez)|with span]] - [[test:Ave Maria a 4 (Josquin des Prez)|with table]]. When the user notes are long, that looks fine, but not when they are just a few words. In fact it's a matter of taste, but we could try to standardize its use; here are my suggestions:
Grateful for your advice.
#change the ScoreError template again so that it behaves in a similar manner to the Editor template, by adding an automatic line break and indentation to it.
#remove completely the borders; in fact it has always bothered me why the error notice should call more attention than the edition itself. The icon [[file:Error.gif]] alone is enough to show that there's a problem in the edition. A compromise could be to keep the border just for the icon and standard message, but not for the user text.

Below are some examples of what I'm proposing:

Hi Carlos,

For me the ideal would be #3, for consistency, but #2 is also acceptable. What do you think? —[[User:Carlos|Carlos]]&nbsp;[{{fullurl:User talk:Carlos}} {{mail}}] 15:54, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for catching Category:Requests Available at IMSLP! To answer [http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php?title=Request:Christmas_Oratorio_(Camille_Saint-Saëns)&curid=19695&diff=1248477&oldid=1248437 this question], The Oratorio is available only in excerpts on CPDL, but complete at IMSLP. In decluttering Category:Requested, I've hesitated in some cases where it seems desirable to me to have the complete work available in the future, or where I myself might prefer a different format. [[User:Richard Mix|Richard Mix]] ([[User talk:Richard Mix|talk]]) 01:09, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
:IMO alternative 2 is best. I don't think that alternative 3 is more consistent: if the broken link icon is close to the place where broken links are located ("warning: if you click here, you get an error message"), the best consistency is achieved if the warning sign for score errors is located close to the place where errors are described. This is especially valid if the error details are actually provided in the discussion page, so the icon is close to the link it refers to. [[User:Choralia|Choralia]] 22:05, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
:Hi Richard! I noticed that you've been doing a great work in sorting out the requests, way to go! Regarding the ''completeness'' of a request, I'm of the opinion that it's 'complete' whenever a page for that work is created on CPDL. If for any reason the editions available here do not cover the whole of the request and IMSLP has a complete edition, that could be informed at the works page, with a link under the "External links" section. This way we'll be helping anyone visiting the works page, not just someone eventually consulting the request page. Regards, —[[User:Carlos|Carlos]] [[User talk:Carlos|(talk)]] 01:24, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
::Fair enough as a traffic directing strategy; how would one have dealt with [[Request:Agnus Dei from Missa L'homme armé (Guillaume Dufay)]]? I guess I've used Template:IncompleteEdition before as a sort of request on my own behalf, but no one has ever taken the hint ;-) [[User:Richard Mix|Richard Mix]] ([[User talk:Richard Mix|talk]]) 01:49, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
:::Does IMSLP have the complete work? If so, a link to it could be added at the works page. Additionally, a note can be added at the request page informing this. Anyway, three movements is already better than nothing :) (thanks for the new edition, BTW!) —[[User:Carlos|Carlos]] [[User talk:Carlos|(talk)]] 02:12, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

:: Actually, I found overlapping variances with Firefox (I examined several pages, but I didn't keep track of which ones overlapped and which ones did not). '''Added later:''' [[Adoramus te, Christe (Claudio Monteverdi)]] and [[O vos omnes (Feria Sexta in Parasceve) (Tomás Luis de Victoria)]] exhibit the two variances in overlapping behavior in Firefox for me.
== Internet links within Template braces ==
:: As someone pointed out previously, the ScoreError template really handles ''two'' kinds of situations, as pointed out on the ScoreError [[Template talk:ScoreError|talk page]]: (1) blatant errors (eg. wrong notes, missing notes, misalignment of notes in separate parts, etc.) and (2) editorial variances (ie. differences amongst editions or versions).  I would hope that the template, when refined, would allow for two different (boldface) declarations (I've abandoned my '''Error alert''' suggestion on the template talk page) - something like '''Edition error(s)''' and '''Edition variance(s)''', respectively.
:: As for format, I think that Alternative 1 is best for the time being, but with the two options instead of '''Possible error(s) identified. Error summary''', if only because people have become accustomed to seeing some yellow which, to me at least, stands out more than just the triangular error icon.  I do not like Alternative 3, which requires placing the icon in one spot and the Error/Variance declaration in another spot - in other words, I agree with Choralia on this point.
:: Hence, my proposal is the following, which has an optional "type" parameter to handle the different situations:
===Alternative 4a (compromise)===
Invoked by <tt><nowiki>{{ScoreError|...}}</nowiki></tt> or <tt><nowiki> (ie. the default behavior is to announce '''Edition errors''')

===Alternative 4b (compromise)===

:: At some point, we might consider removing the yellow background to Alternativer 4 and moving towards something akin to Alternative 2. Hi Carlos!  I am working though a lot of work pages, and along the way trying to update  <tt><nowiki>'''External websites:''' <text></nowiki></tt>  to  {{tl|ExtWeb|<text>}}. I find that I am unable to embed certain urls within the braces; neither can I embed thinks like <tt><nowiki>{{IMSLP2|<IMSPL page>}}</nowiki></tt>. I can't seem to find a character that would cause a problem, but I haven't yet checked all strings of characters. I have discovered that I can put the url within <u>double</u> brackets (<nowiki>[[<url>]]</nowiki>) as a workaround, but that seems like a lot of work, and looks strange. Examples at [[Ach Gott, wem soll ichs klagen (Wolfgang Grefinger)]] and [[Ala guerra, ala guerra (Bartolomeo Tromboncino)]]. Do you have any suggestions?

Max, your argument about the discussion page makes sense; I will follow you on alternative #2 then.
Or maybe I should write code for Template:{{tl|ExtWeb}} to take care of this situation? Thanks! — [[User:BarryJ|Barry Johnston]] [[User talk:BarryJ|(talk)]] 17:26, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

Chuck, with respect to the overlapping, the two examples you gave appear normally for me (I use Firefox 2.0.20); anyway, this problem is temporary, as we are reaching a consensus on a different layout.
:Hi Barry! I'm still trying to figure out what's the advantage of using this new template. As I understood it, it just encapsulates the text that is passed as parameter (in this case, one or more links). But why should we abandon a template such as IMSLP2, for instance, in favor of ExtWeb, as was done [https://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php?title=Ach_Gott,_wem_soll_ichs_klagen_(Wolfgang_Grefinger)&diff=1340040&oldid=1268264 here]? Sorry for asking, maybe you're planning some kind of automation that I'm not aware of, and this is just the first step of the process.
:Regarding the technical problem you cite, the solution is simple, although not very elegant: if a parameter contains an equal sign, it causes the MediaWiki to think that everything before the = is a named parameter. To avoid it, we have to add ourselves a numbered parameter, as I did [https://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php?title=Ach_Gott,_wem_soll_ichs_klagen_(Wolfgang_Grefinger)&diff=1340205&oldid=1340040 here] by adding {{para|1}}. The <code>&lt;nowiki /></code> part corrects another known MediaWiki bug related to the display of bulleted lists inside templates. Regards, —[[User:Carlos|Carlos]] [[User talk:Carlos|(talk)]] 02:40, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

As you said, currently the template is used for two different situations; I particularly see no problem in adding a parameter but I'm afraid that it will increase the complexity for users, ending up not being used by them at all. Couldn't we find a neutral wording that would be valid for both situations? For example, '''Edition variances/errors:''' or something in this line.<br>
== Ma bouche rit ==

About removing the triangular icon: for me personally it is more informative than the yellow backgroung (which still doesn't please me for the reasons mentioned previously); we must also consider that the icon is listed in the [[template:Legend]] and users are probably used to it. When the background color is totally removed (now or in a second phase, as you suggest), the icon would become more useful than it's now. An alternative would be to change the image, if you don't like it: what about [[commons:File:Attention_yellow.png|this one]]?
Hi Carlos,

If we decide to move to alternative #2 in two steps (with alternative #4 as intermediary), what time span would you be comfortable with? —[[User:Carlos|Carlos]]&nbsp;[{{fullurl:User talk:Carlos}} {{mail}}] 13:18, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

== Rachmaninoff Vespers - Music publication? ==
Hi Carlos: I'm afraid that I have botched something somewhere, though maybe with the help of a technical glitch.

Hi Carlos.  I'm a little confused by your categorization of [[Vsenoshchnoe bdenie (All-Night Vigil), Op. 37 (Sergei Rachmaninoff)]] (a.k.a. ''Vespers'') in {{CiteCat|Music publications}}.  I have my own copy of the published score to this work, and it appears to me that it is not really a different sort of work than, say, Handel's ''Messiah'', or Vaughn Williams's ''Five Mystical Songs'', or Randall Thompson's ''The Peaceable Kingdom'', or William Byrd's ''Great Service'', or indeed any other of a host of multi-movement choral works (oratorios, passions, services, cantatas, etc.). Are all these works supposed to be categorized as Music publications, too? I know I created the page to list all the movements of the ''Vespers'', because presently we only have four of the movements available at {{CW}}.  Perhaps it would be better to convert this into a works page with the four movements (currently each with their own pages) merged here? Thanks!! &ndash; [[User:CHGiffen|Chuck]][[User talk:CHGiffen|<small>'''talk'''</small>]]&nbsp;[[User:Charles H. Giffen|Giffen]][[Charles H. Yesterday (19 July 2021) I tried to add a new score ("Blow, winds of God") to my list. I opened up the Add Work Form, made some of the preliminary entries, and moved to upload (1) a pdf file ("Blow, winds of God.pdf") and (2) a Finale file ("Blow, winds of God.musX"). I then returned to the Add Work Form, completed it and submitted it.

:I know that "Music publication" is probably not the best category for these pages, I just can't find a better place to include them. They certainly don't belong in "Sheet music" because they only have a list of movements, but no scores at all (differently from Handel's ''Messiah''). I invite you to find/create a proper category for these special index pages. —[[User:Carlos|Carlos]]&nbsp;[{{fullurl:User talk:Carlos}} {{mail}}] 00:28, 14 March 2010 (UTC)
At once I received two error messages, first the old one which claims that <charles.david.cameron@gmail.com> isn't a valid address, adding this time that my name was wrong too; and then a message that the system had stalled, and might be available later. I copied this material and sent it to all of you admins, as you know.

Hi Carlos.  I don't understand your edit summary and changes on the Taverner page concerning the ''Dum transisset''.  The edition we have at CPDL (from the King Charles Singers) is indeed the one from the Dow partbooks, albeit transposed up a whole tone and note values halved (I just checked the Dow partbooks today). &ndash; [[User:CHGiffen|Chuck]][[User talk:CHGiffen|<small>'''talk'''</small>]]&nbsp;[[User:Charles H. Hi Carlos!
:Oh, thanks for checking it. My edit summary was in fact in reply to Vaarky's changes to that page. She created the page for the [[Dow Partbooks]] but didn't link ''Dum transisset'' from there. As she had edited the composer page and added a second line titled ''Dum transisset II'', I supposed she meant that the version from the "Dow" was the one missing from CPDL. Will fix it then. —[[User:Carlos|Carlos]]&nbsp;[{{fullurl:User talk:Carlos}} {{mail}}] 23:09, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Add New Work form – Instruments

Hi Carlos, A few minutes ago I used the Add New Work form to create Sharon (James P. Carrell). Since it is an a cappella work, I entered that in the Instruments blank. But when I got to the page, there was an error message across the top, about a missing ) in a Multireplace.php program. The page was created correctly, except Instruments was blank. I tried inserting A cappella in the Instruments template, but it didn't work, I got the same message. I managed to get around it by typing '''Instruments:'''{{Acap}}, which gave the same result, it appears (the page was added to Category:A cappella). By the way, I looked at Template:Instruments and noticed that it was editable by me; it should be protected, right? (I did not edit it). Anyway, I thought you should know that this happened. Best to you — Barry Johnston (talk) 04:52, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi Barry, thanks for informing me of this. The problem with template: Instruments seems to be gone, it was just a test by Richard Mix that didn't work out as expected. Regards, —Carlos (talk) 17:50, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

apostrophes in Category names?

Hi Carlos, I got an error message after creating St. Peter's Chains and for the moment have temporarily renamed it. Is there a workaround? Richard Mix (talk) 23:03, 29 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi Richard, what kind of error did you get? I could open the category normally and saw that there is a work already listed in it. —Carlos (talk) 20:00, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
I wasn't too clear: when I created St. Peter's Chains that page looked OK but Category:Sacred music by by season wouldn't load. I've forgotten the exact message but it said something about consulting a manual. Richard Mix (talk) 22:05, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
If you move back Chains of St. Peter or else put back the Cat:Sacred by season on St. Peter's Chains you may be able to see what I mean. I didn't want to leave it as it was with the whole Sacred music by season shut down. Richard Mix (talk) 01:36, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
Hi Richard, the problem lies inside the DPL code that was in the category header of Sacred music by season. For the moment I moved that code to ChoralWiki:Sacred music by season and will see what can be done to fix it. Regards, —Carlos (talk) 03:46, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

Bug in template PostedOn

Hi Carlos. I think your 'localizing' the month changes to PostedOn have resulted in an error. Today (October 26th), PostedOn lists my score A Hymn for St Cecilia (Charles H. Giffen), but the score was posted on September 26th, not October 26th. Here is the result of {{PostedOn|2018-10-26}} (which will probably only be valid for today (or perhaps until the end of the month?).

I'm hesitant to revert your changes, since I'm busy enough today that I won't have time to test any reversion. Could you check into the problem? Thanks. See you Sunday for the Board meeting!! -- Chucktalk Giffen 15:47, 26 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi Chuck. You're right, the template tests for the day and the month separately, as far as I can remember. That could potentially give the results you cite, in that very specific situation. There's certainly room for improvement! I'll have a look at it as soon as I can, but feel free to make any corrections if you already envision a solution for it. Regards, —Carlos (talk) 17:23, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
Hi again. I've implemented a new system that seems to be working correctly. Thanks for spotting the error! —Carlos (talk) 14:49, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

Statistics of downloads of contributed works

Dear Carlos,

I was wondering if it were possible for me to see some statistics (downloads etc) of my contributions? I get the occasional question from a user who took the effort to find my contact, but that doesn't give much information.

Grateful for your advice.

Wim Looyestijn (wim.looyestijn@planet.nl)Wim Looyestijn (talk) 07:37, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

Status 'incompleted'

Hi Carlos,

Thanks for catching Category:Requests Available at IMSLP! To answer this question, The Oratorio is available only in excerpts on CPDL, but complete at IMSLP. In decluttering Category:Requested, I've hesitated in some cases where it seems desirable to me to have the complete work available in the future, or where I myself might prefer a different format. Richard Mix (talk) 01:09, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi Richard! I noticed that you've been doing a great work in sorting out the requests, way to go! Regarding the completeness of a request, I'm of the opinion that it's 'complete' whenever a page for that work is created on CPDL. If for any reason the editions available here do not cover the whole of the request and IMSLP has a complete edition, that could be informed at the works page, with a link under the "External links" section. This way we'll be helping anyone visiting the works page, not just someone eventually consulting the request page. Regards, —Carlos (talk) 01:24, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
Fair enough as a traffic directing strategy; how would one have dealt with Request:Agnus Dei from Missa L'homme armé (Guillaume Dufay)? I guess I've used Template:IncompleteEdition before as a sort of request on my own behalf, but no one has ever taken the hint ;-) Richard Mix (talk) 01:49, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
Does IMSLP have the complete work? If so, a link to it could be added at the works page. Additionally, a note can be added at the request page informing this. Anyway, three movements is already better than nothing :) (thanks for the new edition, BTW!) —Carlos (talk) 02:12, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

Internet links within Template braces

Hi Carlos! I am working though a lot of work pages, and along the way trying to update '''External websites:''' <text> to {{ExtWeb|<text>}}. I find that I am unable to embed certain urls within the braces; neither can I embed thinks like {{IMSLP2|<IMSPL page>}}. I can't seem to find a character that would cause a problem, but I haven't yet checked all strings of characters. I have discovered that I can put the url within double brackets ([[<url>]]) as a workaround, but that seems like a lot of work, and looks strange. Examples at Ach Gott, wem soll ichs klagen (Wolfgang Grefinger) and Ala guerra, ala guerra (Bartolomeo Tromboncino). Do you have any suggestions?

Or maybe I should write code for Template:{{ExtWeb}} to take care of this situation? Thanks! — Barry Johnston (talk) 17:26, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi Barry! I'm still trying to figure out what's the advantage of using this new template. As I understood it, it just encapsulates the text that is passed as parameter (in this case, one or more links). But why should we abandon a template such as IMSLP2, for instance, in favor of ExtWeb, as was done here? Sorry for asking, maybe you're planning some kind of automation that I'm not aware of, and this is just the first step of the process.
Regarding the technical problem you cite, the solution is simple, although not very elegant: if a parameter contains an equal sign, it causes the MediaWiki to think that everything before the = is a named parameter. To avoid it, we have to add ourselves a numbered parameter, as I did here by adding |1=. The <nowiki /> part corrects another known MediaWiki bug related to the display of bulleted lists inside templates. Regards, —Carlos (talk) 02:40, 26 March 2021 (UTC)
