A Seventh Set of Hymn Tunes (John Fawcett)
General information
Publication
John Fawcett's book A Seventh Set of Hymn Tunes, to which is added a few suitable for Christmas was published in Leeds by Sykes and Sons and in London by Preston of Dean Street, Soho. The title page gives Fawcett's residence as 'late of Kendal', but does not specify his location at the time of publication.
The work's publication can be dated to 1829 by advertisements printed in the Leeds Intelligencer. An notice on p2 of that newspaper on 22 October 1829, placed by William Sykes and Sons of 72, Briggate, Leeds, and dated 'Oct. 15, 1829', advertises:
FAWCETT's admired PSALM and HYMN TUNES.
Early in December, 1829, will be published, by W. S. and Sons,
A SEVENTH SET of HYMN TUNES and PIECES, with a few suitable for Christmas, composed and arranged by John Fawcett, (late of Kendal,) for Four Voices, with an Accompaniment for Organ or Piano-Forte, on fine Paper, with handsome Vignette Title.
Price to Subscribers, 4s. 6d.; Non-Subscribers, 6s.
A subsequent advertisement on p2 of the Leeds Intelligencer of 26 November 1829 indicated that the work would be published on 1 December.
An advertisement for 'NEW SACRED MUSIC' sold by Sykes and Sons, printed on p2 of the Leeds Intelligencer of 30 September 1830, listed a second edition of the book; they continued to advertise the work in the same newspaper during November-December 1830, and again in October-December 1831.
Publication date and place: 1829 by Sykes and Sons in Leeds, and by Preston of Dean Street, Soho, London.
Description of contents
The collection consists of 40 strophic hymn tunes.
The music is laid out in full score with the soprano air next to the bass: for most pieces, the order of parts is labelled as Alto - Tenor - AIR - Bass. The treble clef is used for soprano, alto, and tenor parts, with both the alto and tenor parts being notated an octave above sounding pitch. As in Fawcett's earlier works, keyboard accompaniments are indicated both by small notes printed between the soprano and bass parts. Unlike some of Fawcett's earlier works, the bass part is not figured, and unlike his earlier books A Second Sett of Psalm and Hymn Tunes and A Third Sett of Psalm and Hymn Tunes and his later book The Harp of Zion, there are no items with independent parts for orchestral instruments, although some of the organ accompaniments include some ornamentation and harmonisation which takes them beyond being solely reductions of the vocal parts.
