Category talk:Basso continuo

The following was moved here from the former Category talk:Bass continuo (the category has now been replaced by Basso continuo):

Why isn't this category named properly "Basso continuo" with o? "Bass continued" would be fairly acceptable too but Bass continuo just sounds awfully wrong. bms

It's a bit strange indeed, since on work pages it is listed as "Basso continuo", but I won't opine on whether Bass continuo is acceptable or not, because English is not my mother tongue. The English equivalent that I know of is "Figured bass". Carlos 14:18, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Actually, figured bass (it's a system of notation appearing in many basso continuo parts) isn't quite the same (but close enough!!). Since I perpetrated the misnomer of Bass continuo, I'll rectify it and replace it with Basso continuo (I was probably asleep at the wheel when I did that - my apologies). -- Chuck_talk Giffen_♫ 15:05, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Basso seguente?

What is this category going to be used for: should it contain only works with an independent continuo part, or include works that could in a pinch be done without an instrument, however much continuo might contribute to sonority? An example of the first would be Das Blut Jesu Christi, SWV 298 (Heinrich Schütz), of the second (less useful as a category, imo) Das Blut Jesu Christi (Johann Michael Bach), or one might draw the line before a third type, works where optional BC is only provided as an expedient, like Der Geist hilft unsrer Schwachheit auf (Johann Sebastian Bach).
