Biography
Clarence T. Steele was born in the United States. Little is known of his background and training, but he became an established teacher of singing and tenor soloist in Brooklyn, New York City. He also held various positions, including Instructor of Sight-singing at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts & Sciences and Special Teacher of Vocal Music in the New York City Public Schools. He was music director for Puritan Congregational Church, director of the Amphion Chorus, tenor for the Mt. Sinai Synagogue, tenor in the male quartet “Zethus,” member of the Metropolitan Musical Society, and tenor for St. Chrysostom’s Chapel at Trinity Church. He held courses for sight-singing for the public and presented lectures on music history. He wrote manuals on sight-singing and composed a number of songs, part-songs, and hymns. He died in Manhattan, New York City.
