Biography
George Blackburn Holsinger was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He grew up and worked on his father’s farm and taught in the public schools during the winter. He studied music on his own and received musical training at singing schools, musical conventions and normal schools. He became a music teacher at Bridgewater College, Virginia, at its founding and eventually was the director of music, remaining there for 16 years. He then served as music editor for the Brethren Publishing House. He edited or assisted in editing ten popular books including Psalms and Hymns, Gospel Songs and Hymns, Song Praises, and The Brethren Hymnal. He wrote over 200 musical works that appeared in over 150 different music books. He was a devoted member of the Church of the Brethren and taught music classes in many churches. He also wrote Holsinger’s History of the Tunkers and the Brethren Church. He died in Astoria, Illinois, after a short illness as he was conducting a normal school for the Brethren Publishing House.
