Biography
Lucien H. Southard was born in Sharon, Vermont. Following his father’s profession, he first studied medicine at Trinity College in Hartford but left to Boston to pursue music. He was music director at First Church in Boston and general supervisor in the public schools. He moved to Norfolk, Virginia, but returned to the North and enlisted in the Army of the Potomac. He was wounded, discharged, and returned to New England. He soon moved to Baltimore as director of the newly established Conservatory at the Peabody Institute and was the organizer and first director of the orchestra. He was also the first director of the Baltimore Academy of Music. He later returned to Boston, then moved to Augusta, Georgia, keeping active in composition. He died in Augusta. He composed two operas and was most successful with organ works, church music, partsongs, and glees.
