Biography

Smith Newell Penfield was born in Oberlin, Ohio. He studied at Oberlin College, in New York, and in Leipzig, graduating from the Leipzig Conservatory. After returning to the U. S., he taught music in Rochester, New York. He moved to Savannah, Georgia, where he founded the Savannah Conservatory of Music and the Mozart Club. He returned to New York and settled in New York City. He studied at the University of the City of NY and founded the ‘Arion’ Conservatory in Brooklyn. He was organist at the Broadway Tabernacle and served as President of the Music Teachers National Association. He died in New York City. He contributed many articles to “The Etude” and other musical magazines. His compositions included a setting of Psalm 18 as a cantata, an overture, a string quartet, pieces for organ and for piano, choral works, and songs.
