Italian text
Ahi chi mi romp’il sonno ahi chi mi priva
Misero di quel ben ch’ogn’altr’avanza
Chi mi leva di man quella speranza
Ch’era gia lasso pur condott’a riva
I miei chiusi pensier tutti li apriva.
English translation
Who interrupts my sleep? Who deprives me,
O miserable one, of that good which surpasses all other?
Who takes away my hope
just as I have wearily reached the shore?
My lady was with me in my sleep
and so sweet her countenance appeared to me
that I dared talk to her
I opened to her all my hidden thoughts
"As a reward for your loyalty and love"
quoth she touched
"here am I ready at your behest"
But. while I talk to her and gaze at her full of desire,
the jealous Sun awakens me suddenly
killing my heart while wounding my eyes
