Au temps jadis amour s'entretenait
Quand loyauté se tenait maintenue,
Avec amis une foi on tenait,
Chacun vivait en paix bien entendue,

Mais charité maintenant est perdue,
Verité dort, et ne s'ose montrer,
Jusques à ce que liberté rendue
Soit à chacun de parler sans flatter.

English translation

In times of yore was friendship a redoubt
Where everyone did loyalty revere,
Among those whose acquaintance one might tout
Each man could live in peace and without fear.

But now doth charity no more appear,
Truth sleeps and dares not show itself about,
And it will stay like this until it’s clear
That flattery is something best left out.
