German text 1. Introitus (Chorus) Da Jesus an dem Kreuze stund und ihm sein Leichnam war verwund’t sogar mit bittern Schmerzen, die sieben Wort, die Jesus sprach, betracht in deinem Herzen. 2. Symphonia (Instr.) 3. Evangelist (Altus): Und es war um die dritte Stunde, da sie Jesum kreuzigten. Er aber sprach : Jesus: Vater, vergieb ihnen ; denn sie wissen nicht, was sie tun ! Evangelist (Tenor): Es stand aber bei dem Kreuze Jesu seine Mutter und seiner Mutter Schwester, Maria, Cleophas Weib, und Maria Magdalena. Da nun Jesus seine Mutter sahe und den Jünger dabei stehen, den er lieb hatte, sprach er zu seine Mutter : - Jesus: Weib, siehe, das ist dein Sohn ! - Evangelist (Tenor): Darnach spricht er zu dem Jünger : - Jesus: Johannes, siehe, das ist deine Mutter ! - Evangelist (Tenor): Und von Stund an nahm sie der Jünger zu sich. - Evangelist (Sopran): Aber der Übeltäter einer, die da gehenkt waren, lästert’ ihn und sprach : - Schächer zur Linken (Alt) Bist du Christus, so hilf dir selbst und uns ! - Evangelist (Sopran): Da antwortete der ander, strafte ihn und sprach : - Schächer zur Rechten (Baß): Und du, fürchtest dich auch nicht vor Gott, der du doch in gleicher Verdammnis bist ? Und zwar wir sind billig darinnen, denn wir empfangen, was unsre Taten wert sind ; dieser aber hat nichts Ungerechtes gehandelt. - Evangelist (Sopran): Und sprach zu Jesu : - Schächer zur Rechten: Herr gedenke an mich, wenn du in dein Reich kommst ! - Evangelist (Sopran): Und Jesus sprach : - Jesus: Wahrlich ich sage dir : Heute wirst du mit mir im Paradies sein. - Evangelist (Chor): Und um die neunte Stunde schrie Jesus laut und sprach: - Jesus: Eli, Eli, lama asabthani ? - Evangelist (chorus): Das ist verdolmetschet: - Jesus: Mein Gott, mein Gott, warum hast du mich verlassen ? - Evangelist (Altus): Darnach als Jesus wußte, daß schon alles vollbracht war, daß die Schrift erfüllet würde, sprach er : - Jesus: Mich dürstet ! - Evangelist (Tenor): Und einer von den Kriegesknechten lief bald hin, nahm einen Schwamm und füllte ihn mit Essig und Ysopen und steckte ihn auf ein Rohr und hielt ihn dar zum Munde und tränkte ihn. Da nun Jesus den Essig genommen hatte, sprach er : - Jesus: Es ist vollbracht ! - Evangelist (Tenor): Und abermal rief Jesus laut und sprach : - Jesus: Vater, ich befehle meinen Geist in deine Hände ! - Evangelist (Chorus): Und als er das gesagt hatte, neiget er das Haupt und gab seinen Geist auf. 3. Symphonia (Instr.) 4. Conclusio (Chorus) Wer Gottes Marter in Ehren hat und oft gedenkt der sieben Wort, deß will Gott gar eben pflegen, wohl hie auf Erd mit seiner Gnad, und dort in dem ewigen Leben.

English translation 1. Introduction Muse in your heart the seven words that Jesus pronounced in bitter sorrows when he was on the cross, covered with wounds. 2. Symphonia (instr.) 3. - Evangelist (alto): And it was in the third hour, that they crucified Jesus. But he said: - Jesus: Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they do! - Evangelist (tenor): By Jesus' cross stood his mother and his mother's sister Maria, wife of Cleophas, and Maria Magdalena. When Jesus saw his mother and near her the young man he had loved, he said to his mother: - Jesus: Woman, behold your son! - Evangelist (tenor): And then he said to the young one: - Jesus: John, behold your mother! - Evangelist (tenor): And from then on the young man took her with him. - Evangelist (soprano): But one of the two villains that were hung there, insulted him by saying: - Left Thief (alto): You are the Christ, so help yourself and us! - Evangelist (soprano): But the other replied, rebutting him: - Right Thief (bass): And you, do you not fear God, you who are damned like me? We are suffering a just fate, because we gather the fruits of our actions; but he did nothing bad. - Evangelist (soprano): And he said to Jesus: - Right Thief (bass): Lord, remember me when you will be in your kingdom! - Evangelist (soprano): And Jesus said to him: - Jesus: In truth, I tell you: today you'll be in Heaven with me. - Evangelist (chorus): And in the ninth hour, Jesus screamed: - Jesus: Eli, Eli, lama asabthani? - Evangelist (chorus): which means: - Jesus: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? - Evangelist (alto): Then, since he knew that all was accomplished so that the scriptures were fulfilled, Jesus said: - Jesus: I am thirsty! - Evangelist (tenor): And one of the centurions came, took a sponge, filled it with vinegar and hyssop put it on a reed, raised it to his mouth and he drank. When Jesus had drunk the vinegar, he said. - Jesus: all is finished. - Evangelist (tenor): And again he cried and said: - Jesus: Father, I commend my spirit into your hands! - Evangelist (chorus): And after saying this, he lowered his head and gave up his spirit. 4. Symphonia (instr.) 5. Conclusion (chorus): Those who honor the martyrdom of God and often remember the seven words, God will certainly take care of, here on earth through his grace, and there in eternal life.

French translation 1. Introduction Médite dans ton cœur, les sept paroles que Jésus prononça dans d'amères souffrances, quand il était sur la croix, couvert de blessures. 2. Symphonie 3. -Évangéliste (alto) : C'est à la troisième heure qu'ils crucifièrent Jésus. Et Jésus dit : - Jésus : Père, pardonne-leur, car ils ne savent pas ce qu'ils font ! - Évangéliste (ténor) : La mère de Jésus se tenait auprès de la croix, ainsi que la sœur de sa mère, Marie, la femme de Cléophas, et Marie Madeleine. Quand Jésus vit sa mère, et avec elle le disciple qu'il aimait, il dit à sa mère : - Jésus : Femme, vois, ton fils ! - Évangéliste (ténor) : Ensuite il dit au disciple : - Jésus : Jean, vois, ta mère ! - Évangéliste (ténor) : Et dès lors, le disciple la prit chez lui. - Évangéliste (soprano) : Mais l'un des malfaiteurs qui étaient pendus là l'insulta en disant : - Larron de gauche (alto) : Si tu es le Christ, alors aide-toi et aide-nous ! - Évangéliste (soprano) : L'autre répondit en lui faisant des reproches : - Larron de droite (basse) : Et toi, ne crains-tu donc pas Dieu, toi qui es pourtant maudit comme moi ? Nous, nous subissons un juste sort car nous récoltons le fruit de nos actes ; mais lui n'a rien fait de mal. - Évangéliste (soprano) : Et il dit à Jésus : - Larron de droite : Seigneur, souviens-toi de moi, quand tu seras dans ton royaume ! - Évangéliste (soprano) : Et Jésus dit : - Jésus : En vérité, je te le dis : Aujourd'hui tu seras avec moi au Paradis. - Évangéliste (chœur) : Et à la neuvième heure, Jésus s’écria : - Jésus : Eli, Eli, lama asabthani ? - Évangéliste (chœur) : Ce qui signifie : - Jésus : Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, pourquoi m'as-tu abandonné ? - Évangéliste (alto) : Puis, comme il savait que tout était achevé, afin que l’écriture fût accomplie, Jésus dit : - Jésus : J'ai soif ! - Évangéliste (ténor) : Et l'un des centurions accourut, prit une éponge, l'imbiba de vinaigre et d'hysope, la planta sur une tige, la tendit vers sa bouche, et le fit boire. Quand Jésus eut pris le vinaigre, il dit : - Jésus : C'est accompli ! - Évangéliste (ténor) : Et de nouveau, il poussa un cri et dit : - Jésus : Père, je remets mon âme entre tes mains ! - Évangéliste (chœur) : Et après avoir dit cela, il inclina la tête et rendit l'âme. 4. Conclusion (chœur) Celui qui honore le martyre de Dieu et se remémore souvent les sept paroles, Dieu prendra soin de lui dès ici-bas, par sa grâce et là-bas dans la vie éternelle.
