German text Fürwahr, er trug unsere Krankheit und lud auf sich unsre Schmerzen. Wir aber hielten ihn für den, der geplagt, von Gott geschlagen und gemartert wäre. Aber um unserer Missetat willen ward er verwundet und um unserer Sünde willen zerschlagen. Die Strafe liegt auf ihm, auf daß wir Frieden hätten. (Is. 53:4-5) Chorale: Ein Lämmlein geht und trägt die Schuld der Welt und ihrer Kinder, es geht und träget mit Geduld die Sünden aller Sünder; es geht dahin, wird matt und krank, ergibt sich auf der Würgebank, entzieht sich allen Freuden; es nimmt auf sich Schmach, Hohn und Spott, Angst, Wunden, Striemen, Kreuz und Tod und spricht: ich will’s gern leiden. (Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676))

English translation In truth, He bore all of our sorrows and took on Himself all our torment. But we accounted Him a person beset and by God smitten and to death afflicted. And yet it was for our misdeeds that He was wounded, and because of our sins that He was bruised. The scourging fell on Him so that we might be healed. Chorale: A little Lamb bears all the guilt of this world and her children. He bears it all with patience still, the sins of every sinner; and forth He goes, so weak and worn, to scaffold and to death, forlorn, renouncing Earth’s joys sadly accepting shame and mocking mirth, fear, pain, and stripes, the cross and death, saying, I suffer gladly.
