Plibonigi mi volis ĉion aĉan de l' mond',
Sed adoltoj asertis ke ne estas fareble,
Ke nur eblas elekti iĝi lupo aŭ ŝaf'.
Sed mi sentis ke l' mondo ne devas
Esti tia, kia jen estas ĝi.
Kaj mi revis pri mondo pli justa,
Kaj mi gardis tiun revon en mi.
Ĥoro: Mi gardis la revon, tiun revon en mi.

Pli maljuna mi vidis tiom multajn aniĝi
En la roto de lupoj kun loganta elkri':
"Venu! Venu vi ankaŭ! Tio ĉi estas plaĉa:
Jam rostiĝas la karno de la ŝafoj en gras'."
Sed mi vidis ke l' mondo ne devas
Esti tia, kia jen estas ĝi.
Kaj mi revis pri mondo pli justa,
Kaj mi gardis tiun revon en mi.
Ĥoro: Mi gardis la revon, tiun revon en mi.

Nun mi estas maljuna kun kor' afliktita
Ĉar mi povis apenaŭ ŝanĝi ion de l' mond'.
Kaj mi petas indulgon de miaj gefiloj,
Sed ili ridetas respondante al mi:
Jes, ni scias ke l' mondo ne devas
Esti tia, kia jen estas ĝi.
Kaj ni revas pri mondo pli justa,
Kaj ni gardas tiun revon en ni.

English translation

When I was young with a passionate heart,
I wanted to mend every mischief in the world.
But the grown-ups asserted this were impossible,
And that I could only choose becoming a wolf or a sheep.
But I felt that the world did not have to
Be such, just as it was.
And I dreamt of a better world,
And I have kept this dream within me.
Choir: I have kept the dream, this dream within me.

When I was older, I saw so many become part
In the horde of the wolves with an enticing call:
"Come! Come, you too! It is cozy here:
The meat of the sheep already roasts in its grease."
But I saw that the world did not have to
Be such, just as it was.
And I dreamt of a better world
And I have kept this dream within me.
Choir: I have kept the dream, this dream within me.

Now I am old with a saddened heart
Because I could hardly change anything in the world.
And I ask for indulgence at my children
But they smile while responding to me:
"Yes, we know that the world does not have to
Be such, just as it is.
And we dream of a better world,
And we keep this dream within us."
