Giles Farnaby was born in 1560 in Truro, Cornwall, the son of Thomas Farnaby, a scholar and schoolmaster. It seems it was his cousin, Nicholas, a maker of virginals, who turned him to music and it is for his contributions to the {{w|Fitzwilliam Virginal Book}} that Giles Farnaby is best known today, although he also composed madrigals, canzonets and psalms.
In 1592 He graduated from the University of Oxford receiving a Bachelor’s degree in music and his musical output includes a total of 52 pieces which were included in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book along with 4 pieces by his son, Richard.
He died, in London, in November 1640.
