- Edition notes: This arrangement consolidates the original SAB score (1875) and the organ obligato from Quadflieg's SATB arrangement (1902). The current editor is responsible for the tempo and expression indications, and composed the introductions to the Gloria, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei, as well as elaborating the second Agnus Dei from the faux bourdon that Quadflieg provided to meet rubrical requirements for the Mass.

Description: This Mass was composed in the style of the 19th century German Caecilian Movement, originally for SAB a cappella. It is diatonic throughout, and the voice leading and ranges were deliberately chosen to put it within reach of the average parish choir. (See Haller's Introduction to the original 1875 edition.) Because of its simplicity and fresh sound, the Missa Prima achieved considerable popularity, prompting another arrangement in 1902 for SATB with organ obligato. (See Quadflieg's Introduction to his 1902 arrangement.)
