Samuel Besler was a German-Polish composer and schoolmaster. He was cantor at St. Bernhardinus, Breslau, in 1602, then rector of the Gymnasium from 1605. He was a well-known musician in Breslau, and published numerous works, in Latin or in German. His early compositions were, as he said, to foster Christian devotion among the young, and are written in a rather simple style. His later works are more contrapuntal in form. His four Passions of 1612 can be seen as forerunners of the style as used later by Schütz.
