German.png German text

1. Ich hatt' ein Vöglein, ach, wie fein!
Kein schöners mag wohl nimmer sein:

2. Hätt' auf der Brust ein Herzlein rot,
und sung und sung sich schier zu Tot.

3. Herzvogel mein, du Vogel schön,
nun sollt du mit zu Markte gehn!

4. Und als ich in das Städtlein kam,
er saß auf meiner Achsel zahm;

5. und als ich ging am Haus vorbei des Knaben,
dem ich brach die Treu,

6. der Knab just aus dem Fenster sah,
mit seinen Fingern schnaltzt er da:

7. Wie horchet gleich mein Vogel auf!
Zum Knaben fliegt er, husch! hinauf.

8. Der koset ihn so lieb und hold,
ich wust nicht, was ich machen sollt,

9. und stund, im Herzen so erschreckt,
mit Händen mein Gesichte deckt,

10. und schlich davon und weinet sehr,
ich hört ihn rufen hinterher:

11. Du falsche Maid, behüt dich Gott,
ich hab doch wieder mein Herzlein rot!“

1. I had a song-bird that I loved
A prettier one there never was.

2. A small red heart was on its breast;
It sang and sang almost to death.

3. My little bird and dearest pet,
we’re going to town, let’s not forget.

4. Then strolling into town we came
It rode my shoulder, quiet, tame,

5. We passed the house of a boy I knew,
a boy to whom I’d been untrue.

6. He, from the window, looking out,
just snapped his fingers, did not shout

7. My little bird looked up at that
and flew right up there where he sat!

8. Then he caressed the bird so lovingly
That I could not think what to say

9. And stood there startled silently
with face in hands quite helplessly,

10. and crying hard, I crept away.
I heard the boy call out to me,

11. “You faithless girl, God bless your heart,
I’ve gotten back my small red heart!”
